How to Install Aluminum Compression Lugs and Splices (Type ATL and ASP)
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the proper installation of aluminum compression lugs and splices (Type ATL and ASP) for stranded, compressed, compact aluminum and copper conductors, ensuring a secure and reliable electrical connection.
Estimated time: 15m
Tools needed:
Wire brush (T&B catalog number WWB1), Crimping tool (e.g., BlackBurn, Burndy, Thomas & Betts, Anderson), Crimping dies (specific to wire size and tool)
Supplies needed:
Aluminum compression lugs or splices (Type ATL and ASP), Aluminum or copper conductor, Oxide inhibitor
- Turn Off Power and Verify Connector Compatibility
WARNING: ELECTRICAL HAZARD! TURN POWER OFF before beginning installation. Verify the wire size marked on the aluminum connector (Type ATL or ASP) matches the actual cable size to be used.
- Prepare the Conductor
Carefully strip the cable insulation, ensuring no damage occurs to the conductor's strands. Use a wire brush (e.g., T&B catalog number WWB1) to thoroughly brush the conductor side that will be inserted into the connector.
- Insert and Crimp the Conductor
Fully insert the prepared conductor into the aluminum connector. Refer to the 'Tool and Die Index' in the documentation to select the correct tool and die combination for your cable size. Crimp the connector the specified number of times, spacing crimps uniformly along the barrel (for lugs) or just outside the knurl on each side of the center and uniformly along the splice (for splices).
- Clean the Connector
After crimping, wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor from the connector surface to ensure a clean finish.
