Overview

The ABB ATL7502 is a high-capacity aluminum two-hole lug designed for heavy-duty electrical terminations in industrial and utility applications. Engineered for 750 kcmil conductors, this lug supports high-amperage circuits up to 35 kV, making it ideal for substations, power generation facilities, and industrial plants. The 1/2-inch bolt hole ensures compatibility with standard mounting hardware and busbars, while the tin-plated aluminum construction delivers superior conductivity and corrosion resistance. Unlike single-hole lugs, the two-hole design provides enhanced mechanical stability and reduces stress on the conductor, ensuring long-term reliability in high-vibration environments. The ATL7502 is optimized for use in high-voltage cable systems where dependable, low-resistance connections are critical. Its oversized wire range accommodates large conductors, making it a versatile choice for retrofitting or new installations in demanding electrical infrastructure. The lug’s compact footprint and robust build minimize installation time while maximizing performance in harsh operating conditions. Whether used in power distribution panels, motor control centers, or renewable energy systems, the ATL7502 delivers consistent electrical performance with minimal maintenance requirements.

How to Install ATL and ASP Aluminum Compression Lugs and Splices

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of ATL and ASP type aluminum compression lugs and splices for stranded, compressed, compact aluminum and copper conductors.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Wire brush (T&B catalog #WWB1 or equivalent), Crimping tool, Appropriate crimping dies, Voltage tester

Supplies needed:

ATL or ASP aluminum compression lug/splice, Aluminum or copper conductor

  1. Ensure Power is Off

WARNING: ELECTRICAL HAZARD! Before beginning any work, turn off all electrical power to prevent electrical hazard. Verify power is off using appropriate lockout/tagout procedures and a voltage tester.

  2. Verify Connector and Cable Compatibility

Check the wire size marked on the aluminum connector (ATL or ASP) to ensure it matches the actual cable size you intend to use. Using an incorrect size can lead to unsafe connections and poor performance.

  3. Prepare the Cable Conductor

Carefully strip the cable insulation to the appropriate length, taking care to avoid damaging the conductor's strands. Then, thoroughly wire brush the conductor surface that will be inserted into the connector to remove oxides and ensure good electrical contact.

  4. Insert Conductor into Connector

Fully insert the prepared conductor into the barrel of the ATL or ASP compression connector until it bottoms out. Ensure no strands are left outside the connector barrel.

  5. Crimp the Connector

Consult the 'Tool and Die Index' table provided in the documentation to select the correct crimping tool and die combination for your specific cable size. Crimp the connector the number of times indicated in the chart. For splices, make the first crimp just outside the knurl on each side of the center and space subsequent crimps uniformly along the splice. For lugs, make the first crimp at the inner end of the barrel and space subsequent crimps uniformly along the barrel.

  6. Clean Excess Inhibitor

After crimping, wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor from the connector and conductor surface to ensure a clean finish and prevent contamination.
