Molded Junction Box, Length 4 Inch x Width 4 Inch x Depth 2 Inch, Material Polycarbonate, Color GrayHow to Install Aluminum Compression Lugs and Splices (Type ATL and ASP)
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely and correctly installing Type ATL and ASP aluminum compression lugs and splices on stranded, compressed, compact aluminum and copper conductors. Always turn off power before starting.
Estimated time: 20m
Tools needed:
Wire brush (e.g., T&B catalog number WWB1), Crimping tool (mechanical or hydraulic), Appropriate die set for cable size and tool
Supplies needed:
Aluminum compression lugs or splices (Type ATL or ASP), Electrical conductors (aluminum or copper)
- Turn Off Power and Verify Connector Size
WARNING: ELECTRICAL HAZARD! TURN POWER OFF before beginning any work. Verify the wire size marked on the aluminum connector matches the actual cable size you will be using. This ensures proper fit and electrical connection.
- Strip Cable Insulation
Carefully strip the insulation from the end of the cable. Ensure that you avoid damaging the conductor's individual strands during this process to maintain conductor integrity.
- Wire Brush the Conductor
Thoroughly wire brush the conductor side that will be inserted into the connector. This step is crucial for removing any oxidation and ensuring a clean, low-resistance electrical contact. (Reference T&B catalog number WWB1 for a suitable wire brush).
- Insert Conductor into Connector
Fully insert the prepared conductor into the barrel of the aluminum compression connector. Ensure the conductor is seated completely to achieve the intended connection depth.
- Crimp the Connector
Consult the 'Tool and Die Index' provided in the documentation to select the correct tool and die combination for your specific cable size. Crimp the connector the number of times indicated in the chart for your chosen tool/die combination. For splices, make the first crimp just outside the knurl on each side of the center and space subsequent crimps uniformly. For lugs, make the first crimp at the inner end of the barrel and space crimps uniformly along the barrel.
- Clean Excess Oxide Inhibitor
After crimping, wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor that may have been displaced from the connector. This ensures a clean finish and prevents potential issues from residue.
