Overview

The ABB ATL4002 is a Type Aluminum Two-Hole Lug designed for high-voltage electrical connections up to 35kV. Engineered for use with aluminum or copper conductors (concentric, compressed, or compact), this lug is constructed from high-conductivity seamless aluminum tubing, ensuring optimal electrical performance. The ATL4002 accommodates wire sizes up to 400 kcmil, with a maximum amperage rating of 400 A, making it suitable for heavy-duty industrial applications. The lug features a 1/2 inch bolt hole for secure mounting and compatibility with standard hardware. Tin plating provides enhanced corrosion resistance, while the green die color code enables quick identification of proper crimping during installation. Pre-filled with oxide-inhibiting compound, the ATL4002 ensures long-term reliability and reduced maintenance in demanding environments. Chamfered barrels simplify installation, and the product is designed for use with high-voltage insulation techniques when required. Ideal for power distribution and transmission infrastructure, this lug delivers secure, durable terminations in critical electrical systems. The two-hole design allows for redundant connection points, improving mechanical stability and electrical continuity in high-stress applications. Its aluminum construction ensures lightweight durability while maintaining high conductivity, and the tin plating extends service life in corrosive environments. The green die color code aligns with industry standards for 400 kcmil wire size, reducing installation errors. The lug meets stringent electrical and mechanical performance requirements for 35kV systems, including resistance to thermal cycling and vibration. The product is manufactured under ABB’s quality management system, guaranteeing consistent performance across applications.

How to Install ATL and ASP Aluminum Compression Lugs and Splices

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Type ATL and ASP aluminum compression lugs and splices on stranded, compressed, compact aluminum, and copper conductors.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Crimping tool (mechanical or hydraulic, refer to Tool & Die Index), Wire brush (T&B catalog #WWB1)

Supplies needed:

Aluminum compression lug or splice (Type ATL/ASP), Electrical cable/conductor, Oxide inhibitor

  1. Turn Off Power and Ensure Safety

WARNING: ELECTRICAL HAZARD! Before beginning any installation, ensure all power to the circuit is turned OFF to prevent electrical shock or injury.

  2. Verify Connector Size and Strip Cable Insulation

Check the wire size marked on the aluminum connector to confirm it matches the actual cable size you will be using. Strip the cable insulation carefully, avoiding any damage to the conductor's strands.

  3. Brush Conductor and Insert into Connector

Using a wire brush (e.g., T&B catalog #WWB1), thoroughly brush the conductor side that will be inserted into the connector to remove any oxidation. Fully insert the cleaned conductor into the connector barrel.

  4. Crimp the Connector According to Chart

Refer to the 'Tool and Die Index' provided in the documentation to select the correct crimping tool and die combination for your cable size. Crimp the connector the specified number of times. For splices, make the first crimp just outside the knurl on each side of the center and space subsequent crimps uniformly. For lugs, make the first crimp at the inner end of the barrel and space crimps uniformly along the barrel.

  5. Clean Excess Oxide Inhibitor

After completing the crimping process, wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor from the connector and conductor to ensure a clean and secure connection.
