Overview

The ABB ATL40-12 is a Type Aluminum One-Hole Lug designed for reliable electrical terminations. This lug is rated for up to 35 kV, making it suitable for medium-voltage applications. It is engineered to accommodate 4/0 AWG Stranded (Str) wire, ensuring a secure connection for conductors of this size. The lug features a 1/2 inch bolt hole for straightforward mounting with standard hardware. The aluminum construction is enhanced with tin plating, providing excellent conductivity and resistance to corrosion, which is critical for maintaining electrical integrity over time. A distinct White die color code is applied for easy identification and proper application within electrical systems. While the provided catalog excerpts detail various ABB lugs with different wire ranges and compatibility with specific terminal blocks and enclosures (e.g., TCAL41 for TB6, TCLK43 for TLB4/THLC4, TCAL12A for E150/THLC1/TB1, TCAL1312 for TK4V, MLT42 with 400A rating and 250-600 kcmil wire size, MLA41 with 400A max amperage and 2-600 kcmil wire size), the ATL40-12 specifically targets 4/0 Str wire and a 1/2 inch bolt hole for its intended use. This component is a practical choice for electrical contractors and engineers requiring durable and effective lugs for their projects, prioritizing functionality and longevity in demanding electrical environments.

How to Install ATL and ASP Aluminum Compression Lugs and Splices

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely installing Type ATL and ASP aluminum compression lugs and splices on stranded, compressed, compact aluminum, and copper conductors.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Wire brush (T&B catalog number WWB1 recommended), Crimping tool (e.g., Blackburn, Burndy, or Thomas & Betts), Appropriate crimping dies

Supplies needed:

Aluminum compression lug or splice (Type ATL or ASP), Aluminum or copper conductor, Oxide inhibitor

  1. Safety First: Turn Off Power

WARNING: ELECTRICAL HAZARD! Before beginning any work, ensure all power to the circuit is completely turned off to prevent electrical shock.

  2. Verify Connector and Cable Size

Check the wire size marked on the aluminum connector (Type ATL or ASP) to confirm it matches the actual cable size you will be using. Refer to Figure 1 in the documentation.

  3. Strip Cable Insulation

Carefully strip the insulation from the cable, ensuring you avoid any damage to the conductor's strands. Refer to Figure 2 in the documentation.

  4. Wire Brush the Conductor

Thoroughly wire brush the portion of the conductor that will be inserted into the connector. Use a wire brush, such as T&B catalog number WWB1, to remove any oxidation. Refer to Figure 3 in the documentation.

  5. Insert Conductor into Connector

Fully insert the prepared conductor into the barrel of the aluminum compression connector until it reaches the stop. Refer to Figure 4 in the documentation.

  6. Crimp the Connector

Consult the 'Tool and Die Index' provided in the documentation. Select the correct crimping tool and die combination for your specific cable size. Crimp the connector the number of times indicated in the chart for your chosen tool/die combination. For splices, make the first crimp just outside the knurl on each side of the center and space subsequent crimps uniformly. For lugs, make the first crimp at the inner end of the barrel and space crimps uniformly along the barrel.

  7. Clean Excess Oxide Inhibitor

Wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor that may have been expelled during the crimping process.
