Overview

The ABB ATL300-12 is a Type Aluminum One-Hole Lug designed for high-voltage applications up to 35kV. Rated for 300 kcmil wire, this lug features a 1/2-inch bolt hole for secure mechanical and electrical connections. The tin-plated finish provides corrosion resistance, ensuring long-term reliability in outdoor and industrial environments. The blue die color code simplifies identification in inventory and installation workflows. This lug is part of ABB’s Installation Products line, known for precision-engineered components for electrical systems. The aluminum construction offers a balance of conductivity and weight savings compared to copper alternatives, making it suitable for substations, switchgear, and distribution panels. The one-hole design simplifies installation, reducing labor time while maintaining compliance with NEC and UL standards for electrical connections. Use the ATL300-12 for terminating or splicing 300 kcmil aluminum conductors in medium-voltage systems. Its compact form factor allows for tight installation spaces, and the tin plating ensures compatibility with both aluminum and copper conductors when used with proper joint compounds. Always verify ampacity and torque specifications for your application.

How to Install Aluminum Compression Lugs and Splices (Type ATL and ASP)

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and correct installation of Thomas & Betts Type ATL and ASP aluminum compression lugs and splices for stranded, compressed, compact aluminum and copper conductors.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Wire brush (T&B WWB1 or equivalent), Crimping tool, Appropriate crimping dies (refer to Tool and Die Index)

Supplies needed:

Aluminum compression lug or splice (Type ATL or ASP), Aluminum or copper conductor, Oxide inhibitor (if not pre-applied)

  1. Turn Off Electrical Power

WARNING: ELECTRICAL HAZARD! Before beginning any work, ensure all electrical power to the circuit is completely turned off to prevent electric shock or injury.

  2. Verify Connector and Conductor Size

Check the wire size marked on the aluminum compression connector (Type ATL or ASP) to confirm it is the correct size for the aluminum or copper cable you intend to use. Refer to Figure 1 in the documentation.

  3. Strip Conductor Insulation

Carefully strip the insulation from the end of the cable. Ensure you avoid damaging the conductor's strands during this process. Refer to Figure 2 in the documentation.

  4. Clean the Conductor

Thoroughly wire brush the conductor side that will be inserted into the connector. Use a wire brush (e.g., T&B catalog number WWB1) to remove any oxidation. Refer to Figure 3 in the documentation.

  5. Insert Conductor into Connector

Fully insert the prepared conductor into the barrel of the aluminum compression connector until it reaches the stop. Refer to Figure 4 in the documentation.

  6. Crimp the Connector

Consult the 'Tool and Die Index' provided in the documentation. Select the appropriate crimping tool and die combination for your specific cable size. Crimp the connector the number of times indicated in the chart. For splices, make the first crimp just outside the knurl on each side of the center and space subsequent crimps uniformly. For lugs, make the first crimp at the inner end of the barrel and space crimps uniformly along the barrel.

  7. Clean Excess Oxide Inhibitor

Wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor that may have been displaced during the crimping process from the connector and conductor.
