How to Install Aluminum Compression Lugs and Splices
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely installing Type ATL and ASP aluminum compression lugs and splices on stranded, compressed, compact aluminum and copper conductors.
Estimated time: 20m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Wire brush (e.g., T&B catalog number WWB1), Crimping tool, Crimping dies
Supplies needed:
Aluminum compression lugs or splices (Type ATL/ASP), Aluminum or copper conductors, Oxide inhibitor (if not pre-applied)
- Turn Off Power
WARNING: ELECTRICAL HAZARD! Before beginning any work, ensure all power to the circuit is completely turned off to prevent electrical shock or injury.
- Verify Connector and Strip Cable
Check the wire size marked on the aluminum connector to ensure it is the correct connector for the actual cable size. Carefully strip the cable insulation, avoiding damage to the conductor's strands.
- Brush Conductor
Using a wire brush (such as T&B catalog number WWB1), thoroughly brush the conductor side that will be inserted into the connector to remove any oxidation.
- Insert Conductor into Connector
Fully insert the prepared conductor into the aluminum compression connector until it bottoms out.
- Crimp the Connector
Refer to the 'Tool and Die Index' to select the appropriate crimping tool and die combination for your specific cable size. Crimp the connector the number of times shown on the chart for your selected tool/die combination. For splices, make the first crimp just outside the knurl on each side of the center and space subsequent crimps uniformly along the splice. For lugs, make the first crimp at the inner end of the barrel and space crimps uniformly along the barrel.
- Clean Excess Inhibitor
Wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor from the crimped connection.
