How to Install Aluminum Compression Lugs and Splices (Type ATL and ASP)
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Type ATL and ASP aluminum compression lugs and splices on stranded, compressed, compact aluminum and copper conductors.
Estimated time: 15m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Wire brush (T&B WWB1 or equivalent), Crimping tool with appropriate die set
Supplies needed:
Aluminum compression lug or splice (Type ATL or ASP), Aluminum or copper conductor cable, Oxide inhibitor (if not pre-applied)
- Turn Power Off
WARNING: ELECTRICAL HAZARD! Before beginning any work, ensure that all power to the circuit is completely turned off and locked out to prevent accidental energization.
- Verify Connector and Cable Size
Check the wire size marked on the aluminum connector to ensure it is the correct connector for the actual cable size that will be used. Refer to Figure 1 in the documentation.
- Strip Cable Insulation
Carefully strip the cable insulation to the appropriate length, avoiding any damage to the conductor's strands. Refer to Figure 2 in the documentation.
- Wire Brush Conductor
Wire brush the conductor side that will be inserted into the connector to remove any oxidation. Use a wire brush (e.g., T&B catalog number WWB1). Refer to Figure 3 in the documentation.
- Insert Conductor
Fully insert the prepared conductor into the connector barrel until it bottoms out. Refer to Figure 4 in the documentation.
- Crimp the Connector
Refer to the 'Tool and Die Index' chart in the documentation to select the correct tool/die combination for your cable size. Crimp the connector the specified number of times. For splices, make the first crimp just outside the knurl on each side of the center and space crimps uniformly. For lugs, make the first crimp at the inner end of the barrel and space crimps uniformly along the barrel.
- Clean Excess Inhibitor
Wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor from the crimped connection.
