How to Install Aluminum Compression Lugs and Splices (Type ATL and ASP)

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and correct installation of Thomas & Betts Type ATL and ASP aluminum compression lugs and splices on stranded, compressed, or compact aluminum and copper conductors.

Estimated time: 15m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimping tool, Appropriate crimping dies

Supplies needed:

Aluminum compression lugs or splices (Type ATL or ASP), Aluminum or copper conductors

  1. Turn Off Power and Verify Connector Size

WARNING: ELECTRICAL HAZARD! TURN POWER OFF before beginning installation. Verify the wire size marked on the aluminum connector matches the actual cable size to be used.

  2. Strip Cable Insulation

Carefully strip the cable insulation from the conductor, ensuring no damage occurs to the conductor's strands.

  3. Wire Brush Conductor

Using a wire brush (e.g., T&B catalog number WWB1), thoroughly brush the conductor side that will be inserted into the connector to remove any oxidation.

  4. Insert Conductor

Fully insert the prepared conductor into the aluminum compression connector until it reaches the stop or is completely seated.

  5. Crimp the Connector

Refer to the 'Tool and Die Index' table to select the correct tool/die combination and the required number of crimps for your cable size. Perform the crimps as specified: for splices, make the first crimp just outside the knurl on each side of the center and space subsequent crimps uniformly; for lugs, make the first crimp at the inner end of the barrel and space subsequent crimps uniformly along the barrel.

  6. Clean Excess Inhibitor

Wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor that may have been expelled during the crimping process.
