Overview

The ABB ATL10-38 is a high-conductivity aluminum one-hole lug designed for reliable electrical connections in medium-voltage systems up to 35kV. Engineered for use with stranded copper or aluminum conductors sized 1/0 AWG, this lug provides a secure termination point for power distribution and transmission infrastructure. The ATL10-38 features a 3/8-inch bolt hole for direct fastening to busbars, equipment, or other termination hardware, ensuring mechanical stability and electrical integrity. Constructed from seamless aluminum tubing with a tin-plated finish, the lug offers superior corrosion resistance, critical for long-term performance in demanding utility and industrial environments. The tin plating also enhances electrical conductivity, reducing contact resistance and minimizing heat generation during operation. The barrel is chamfered for simplified installation, allowing for easier insertion of conductors and reducing the risk of damage during crimping or compression. The ATL10-38 is color-coded Tan for quick identification and inventory management, aligning with industry standards for lug die colors. It is prefilled with an oxide-inhibiting compound to prevent oxidation at the conductor-lug interface, maintaining low resistance and preventing hot spots. This lug is compatible with standard compression tools from Blackburn®, Burndy®, T&B®, and Anderson, ensuring consistent and reliable terminations when installed per manufacturer guidelines. Ideal for medium-voltage applications, the ATL10-38 supports high-voltage insulation techniques to meet safety and performance requirements. Its design accommodates both aluminum and copper conductors, providing versatility for mixed-material installations. Whether used in power substations, switchgear, or industrial control panels, this lug delivers a dependable connection solution for critical electrical systems.

How to Install Aluminum Compression Lugs and Splices (Type ATL and ASP)

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of aluminum compression lugs and splices for stranded, compressed, compact aluminum, and copper conductors.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Wire brush (T&B catalog number WWB1 or equivalent), Crimping tool, Die set (specific to cable size and connector)

Supplies needed:

Aluminum compression lugs or splices (Type ATL and ASP), Aluminum or copper conductors, Oxide inhibitor (if not pre-applied)

  1. Turn Off Power

WARNING: ELECTRICAL HAZARD! Before beginning any work, turn off all power to the circuit to prevent electrical shock or injury.

  2. Verify Connector and Cable Size

Check the wire size marked on the aluminum connector to ensure it is the correct connector for the actual cable size you will be using.

  3. Strip Cable Insulation

Carefully strip the cable insulation, avoiding any damage to the conductor's strands.

  4. Wire Brush the Conductor

Wire brush the conductor side that will be inserted into the connector. Use a wire brush, such as T&B catalog number WWB1, to ensure a clean surface.

  5. Insert Conductor into Connector

Fully insert the prepared conductor into the aluminum connector until it bottoms out.

  6. Crimp the Connector

Consult the Tool and Die Index to select the correct tool and die combination for your cable size. Crimp the connector the number of times specified in the chart for your chosen tool/die combination. For splices, make the first crimp just outside the knurl on each side of the center and space crimps uniformly. For lugs, make the first crimp at the inner end of the barrel and space crimps uniformly along the barrel.

  7. Clean Excess Oxide Inhibitor

Wipe off any excess oxide inhibitor from the completed crimp connection.
