How to Install 756/776LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing 756/776LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors. These connectors provide fully shielded, submersible deadfront cable connections for 600-ampere or 900-ampere, 35kV class systems.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Crimping tool, Wire brush, Hotstick, Suitable voltage sensing device, Wire strippers, Cutting tool, Multimeter
Supplies needed:
756/776LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector kit, Cable (appropriate type for 35kV class systems), Grounding device or suitable grounding connector, No. 14 AWG Copper wire (or equivalent ampacity), Waterproofing material (for cable jacket)
- Ensure Safety and Prepare Components
Before beginning, ensure all apparatus are de-energized. Verify the contents of the connector package are complete and undamaged. Inspect all components for proper fit with the cable and mating products. This installation must only be performed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical safety practices and in accordance with all local and national work rules.
- Position and Cut Cable
Position the cable in its final assembled location, ensuring enough slack to allow for elbow removal. Cut the cable 1-3/4 inches (45mm) from the centerline of the mating product. Clean the outer jacket of the cable for a distance of 24 inches (610mm).
- Prepare Cable End
Prepare the cable according to its type (Unishield, Lead Sheath, Jacketed, or Non-Jacketed) as detailed in the specific instructions for your cable type or the provided diagrams. Bevel the end of the cable insulation at a 45-degree angle, approximately 1/4 inch (6mm) back. Thoroughly clean and lubricate the cable insulation, working towards the semi-con shield. Install the cable adapter, small end first, until it is flush with the edge of the tape marker.
- Expose Conductor and Install Compression Lug
Remove the protruding cable insulation, cutting it even with the end of the cable adapter. Ensure the exposed conductor length is between 4-3/8 inches (111mm) and 4-3/4 inches (121mm). For aluminum conductors, wire brush the conductor immediately before insertion. Fully insert the conductor into the compression lug. Measure the 'Check Dimension' (must be less than 7 inches / 178mm) before crimping. Crimp the compression lug according to its supplied instructions. After crimping, wipe off all excess inhibitor. Verify the distance from the end of the compression lug to the cable adapter is between 6-7/8 inches (175mm) and 7-5/8 inches (194mm).
- Install Elbow onto Cable Adapter
Lubricate the cable adapter and the inside of the elbow's cable entrance. Install the elbow onto the cable adapter until it cannot advance further. Confirm the cable adapter remains flush with the tape marker; reposition if necessary. Remove the tape marker.
- Connect Elbow to Mating Product
Remove protective caps from both the elbow and the mating part. If the mating part lacks a stud, hand tighten the supplied threaded stud into it. Clean and lubricate both the elbow and the mating part with the supplied lubricant, ensuring surfaces remain clean. Push the elbow onto the mating part, aligning the compression lug's hole with the mating part's stud. For the opposite end, clean and lubricate the mating part, insert it into the elbow, engage the threads, and hand tighten. Torque the mating part according to its specific instructions. Do not connect or disconnect while energized, and do not energize while disconnected.
- Install Insulating Plug and Ground Cable
If an insulating plug is used as a mating part, clean and lubricate the inner surface of the voltage detection cap and place it on the elbow, pushing down until it snaps into place. Insert one end of a No. 14 AWG Copper wire (or equivalent) through the grounding eye, twist to form a small loop, and connect it to ground using a suitable connector. Ensure the cable shield is grounded either via a grounding device or an alternate method. Waterproof the cable jacket at this point to prevent moisture ingress.
- Perform Voltage Test
If the connector has an integral capacitance test point, remove the test point cap with a hotstick, peeling it off at an angle. Use a suitable sensing device, specifically designed for capacitive test points, to determine if the cable is energized. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Treat the elbow as energized until a 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious injury. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone lubricant and replace it on the test point.
