How to Install the LINK-C 600 Amp Deadbreak Connector System
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the LINK-C 600 amp deadbreak connector system, including mounting, wiring, and connection procedures. Ensure all safety warnings are observed before beginning.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Torque wrench, Socket wrench (1 inch hex), Hot stick, Wire strippers, Welding equipment (if studs are not pre-welded), Approved test apparatus or multimeter
Supplies needed:
ELASTIMOLD lubricant, 3/8-16 x 2” studs (3, if not pre-welded), 3/8-16 hex nuts (6), Lockwashers (3), #14 AWG or #12 AWG solid copper wire, Appropriate grounding connector, 600 amp elbow (pre-installed on cable), 600 amp bushing extender, Retainer contact (600ATM/600AMT), Epoxy standoff plug, Alignment bracket, Bushing extender clamp hardware, Elbow clamp hardware, Desired 200 amp mating product and its installation supplies
- Safety First: De-energize and Verify
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of any parts. This product must only be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices. Verify the system is de-energized using approved test apparatus or a multimeter before proceeding.
- Prepare the Mounted Stand-Off Plug (if applicable)
If using a mounted stand-off plug, weld three 3/8-16 x 2” studs to the equipment faceplate according to specified dimensions. Install three hex nuts onto the studs to support the stand-off plug, ensuring it aligns with the apparatus bushing. Place the stand-off plug over the studs, then secure with lockwashers and hex nuts, torquing to 12 ft-lbs. Confirm the top surfaces of the bushing and stand-off plug are in-line.
- Install Bushing Extender and Elbow Components
Clean and thoroughly lubricate the apparatus bushing and both interfaces of the 600 amp bushing extender with ELASTIMOLD lubricant. Install the bushing extender onto the apparatus bushing. Insert the 600ATM retainer contact into the bushing extender, engaging the internal hex broach, and thread into the apparatus bushing. Torque to 50-60 ft-lbs using a suitable tool on the 1” hex portion. Repeat the cleaning and lubrication process for the epoxy standoff plug and both interfaces of the 600 amp elbow. Install the elbow onto the epoxy standoff plug, inserting the 600AMT retainer contact through the compression lug hole and threading into the standoff plug. Torque to 50-60 ft-lbs.
- Mount the Alignment Bracket
Remove the bushing extender and elbow clamps from the alignment bracket. Position the alignment bracket on the bushing extender 2.5 inches (63.5mm) from the grounding eye. Assemble the bushing extender clamp to the bracket with supplied hardware, torquing by alternating sides until the clamp tabs are flush and tight. Align the elbow cuff evenly with the bushing extender cuff. Assemble the elbow clamp to the alignment bracket, torquing until tabs are flush and tight, ensuring the elbow clamp notch faces the cable entrance.
- Insert the LINK-C Connector
Clean and thoroughly lubricate both 600 ampere interfaces of the LINK-C with ELASTIMOLD lubricant. Align the LINK-C to be perpendicular to the switch faceplate. Insert the LINK-C into both the bushing extender and the elbow, ensuring both lever arms are positioned on the inside of the alignment bracket legs. Engage the pivot pin into the slots of the alignment bracket legs. While pushing inward, use a hot stick to move the lever arms downward, engaging the roller pin and moving the LINK-C inward until the lever arms are perpendicular to the alignment bracket leg.
- Ground the System and Install Mating Products
Ground the elbow by feeding a #14 AWG or #12 AWG solid copper wire through its grounding eye, twisting it tight, and connecting it to a common ground point. Clean and lubricate the 200 amp interface on the LINK-C. Ground and then install the desired 200 amp mating product onto this interface according to its specific installation instructions. Finally, ensure the cable is properly grounded; for concentric neutral cable, twist wires together and connect to ground, or for 20MA/21MA devices, connect the ground lead to ground. For three-phase installations, tie all grounds from all three phases to a common ground point.
