How to Install the LINK-C Deadbreak Cam Link Operable Connector System
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the LINK-C 600 amp deadbreak cam link operable connector system. It covers mounting, lubrication, component assembly, and grounding procedures for a fully shielded and submersible connection.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Hot stick, Suitable tool for 1-inch hex, Torque wrench, 600ATM Operating Tool, Wire strippers
Supplies needed:
ELASTIMOLD supplied lubricant, 3/8-16 x 2 inch studs, Hex nuts, Lockwashers, Spacers (optional), #14 AWG or #12 AWG solid copper wire, Appropriate grounding connector, Insulated caps or connectors
- De-energize Apparatus and Prepare
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation or removal of any parts. Verify the system is de-energized using approved test apparatus or a test rod in conjunction with an appropriate meter. Follow established utility procedures for safety. Inspect all package contents to ensure completeness and no damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and/or mating products. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure. If the product is supplied with protective shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before submerging or energizing.
- Install 600 Amp Elbow onto Cable
Install the 600 amp elbow onto the cable according to the specific installation instructions provided with the elbow. Ensure the elbow is positioned to align correctly with the stand-off plug.
- Install Mounted Stand-Off Plug (If Applicable)
Weld three 3/8-16 x 2 inch studs to the equipment faceplate according to customer standard practice and specified dimensions. Install three hex nuts onto the three studs to support the stand-off plug, ensuring it aligns with the bushing. Alternatively, use three spacers if preferred. Place the stand-off plug over the three studs, resting it on the nuts or spacers. Secure the stand-off plug by installing a lockwasher and a hex nut on each of the three studs. Tighten each nut to 12 foot-lbs torque. Verify that the top surfaces of the apparatus bushing and the stand-off plug are in-line. Re-adjust the support nuts as necessary to achieve proper alignment.
- Install Bushing Extender and Elbow
Clean and thoroughly lubricate the apparatus bushing and both interfaces of the 600 amp bushing extender using ELASTIMOLD supplied lubricant. Proper lubrication is crucial for future removal of the link. Install the bushing extender onto the apparatus bushing. Insert the 600ATM tool into the retainer contact, engaging its internal hex broach. Insert the retainer contact into the bushing extender and thread it into the apparatus bushing. Use a suitable tool applied to the 1-inch hex portion of the 600ATM and torque to 50-60 ft-lbs. Clean and thoroughly lubricate the epoxy stand-off plug and both interfaces of the 600 amp elbow with ELASTIMOLD supplied lubricant. Proper lubrication is crucial for future removal of the link. Install the elbow onto the epoxy stand-off plug. Insert the 600AMT tool into the retainer contact, engaging its internal hex broach. Insert the retainer contact into the 600 amp elbow through the compression lug hole and thread it into the epoxy stand-off plug. Use a suitable tool applied to the 1-inch hex portion of the 600AMT and torque to 50-60 ft-lbs.
- Install Alignment Bracket
Remove the bushing extender clamp and elbow clamp from the alignment bracket. Position the alignment bracket on the bushing extender, ensuring it is 2.5 inches (63.5mm) from the grounding eye. Assemble the bushing extender clamp to the alignment bracket using the supplied hardware. Torque by alternating sides until the clamp tabs are flush with each other and tight on both sides.
- Position and Secure Elbow in Alignment Bracket
Position the elbow within the alignment bracket so that the elbow cuff is lined up evenly with the bushing extender cuff. Assemble the elbow clamp to the alignment bracket with the supplied hardware. Torque by alternating sides until the clamp tabs are flush with each other and tight on both sides. Ensure the elbow clamp notch faces the cable entrance of the elbow.
- Install the LINK-C Connector
Clean and thoroughly lubricate both 600 ampere interfaces of the LINK-C connector with ELASTIMOLD supplied lubricant. Proper lubrication is crucial for future removal of the link. Align the LINK-C connector so that it is perpendicular to the switch faceplate when inserted into the bushing extender and elbow. Insert the LINK-C connector into the bushing extender and elbow, ensuring both lever arms are positioned on the inside of the alignment bracket legs. Engage the pivot pin into the slots in the alignment bracket legs. While pushing inward, use a hot stick eye to move the lever arms downward, engaging the roller pin and moving the link inward. Continue moving the lever arms until they are perpendicular to the alignment bracket leg.
- Ground the System and Install Mating Products
Ground the elbow: Feed a #14 AWG or #12 AWG solid copper wire through the grounding eye on the elbow, twist it tight, and connect it securely to ground. Clean and lubricate the 200 amp interface on the LINK-C connector. Ground and then install the desired mating product onto the 200 amp interface, following the installation instructions provided with that specific mating product. Ground the cable: If using concentric neutral cable, twist the concentric neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. If using 20MA or 21MA grounding devices, connect the ground lead from the device to ground using a suitable connector. For three-phase installations, ensure all grounds from all three phases are tied to a common ground point.
