How to Install the LINK-C Deadbreak Cam Link Operable Connector System
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the installation and initial setup of the LINK-C 600 amp deadbreak cam link operable connector system, including mounting, wiring, and grounding procedures. Ensure all safety warnings are observed.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Torque Wrench, Wrench/Socket (for 1 inch hex), Hot Stick, 600ATM Operating Tool, Wire Strippers, Welding Equipment (if mounting studs)
Supplies needed:
600 Amp Elbow (specific to cable), Standoff Plug (specific to apparatus), ELASTIMOLD Supplied Lubricant, 3/8-16 x 2 inch Studs (3, if applicable), 3/8-16 Hex Nuts (6, if applicable), 3/8-16 Lockwashers (3, if applicable), Alignment Bracket, 600 Amp Bushing Extender, Mounting Hardware (for clamps, typically supplied), #14 AWG or #12 AWG Solid Copper Grounding Wire, Appropriate Grounding Connectors, Desired 200 Amp Mating Product, HV Insulated Caps (if not immediately connecting a mating product)
- Prepare for Installation
DANGER: De-energize all apparatus before beginning installation or removal of parts. Inspect all components for damage, proper rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Ensure all required tools and supplies are at hand and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure. This product should only be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical equipment safety practices.
- Install 600 Amp Elbow on Cable
Install the 600 amp elbow onto the cable according to the installation instructions supplied with the elbow. Ensure it will align correctly with the standoff plug.
- Determine Mounting Configuration
Determine whether you are installing the 'Alignment Bracket with Bolted Stand-Off Plug' or the 'Alignment Bracket' only. If installing with a bolted stand-off plug, proceed to Step 4. Otherwise, skip to Step 5.
- Mount Bolted Stand-Off Plug (If Applicable)
Weld three 3/8-16 x 2 inch studs to the faceplate per customer standard practice and specified dimensions. Install three hex nuts onto the studs to support the standoff plug, ensuring it aligns with the bushing. Place the standoff plug over the studs, resting on the nuts or optional spacers. Secure with a lockwasher and hex nut on each stud, torquing to 12 ft-lbs. Verify the top surfaces of the apparatus bushing and standoff plug are in-line; readjust nuts if needed.
- Install Bushing Extender and Elbow
Clean and thoroughly lubricate the apparatus bushing and both interfaces of the 600 amp bushing extender with ELASTIMOLD supplied lubricant. Install the bushing extender onto the apparatus bushing. Insert the 600ATM into the retainer contact and engage the internal hex broach. Insert the retainer contact into the bushing extender and thread into the apparatus bushing using a suitable tool on the 1 inch hex portion of the 600ATM, torque to 50-60 ft-lbs. Repeat cleaning, lubricating, and installation for the elbow onto the epoxy standoff plug, torquing to 50-60 ft-lbs.
- Attach Alignment Bracket to Bushing Extender
Remove the bushing extender clamp and elbow clamp from the alignment bracket. Position the alignment bracket on the bushing extender 2.5 inches (63.5mm) from the grounding eye. Assemble the bushing extender clamp to the alignment bracket with supplied hardware. Torque by alternating sides until clamp tabs are flush with each other and tight on both sides.
- Secure Elbow in Alignment Bracket
Position the elbow in the alignment bracket such that the elbow cuff is lined up evenly with the bushing extender cuff. Assemble the elbow clamp to the alignment bracket with supplied hardware. Torque by alternating sides until clamp tabs are flush with each other and tight on both sides. Ensure the elbow clamp notch faces the cable entrance of the elbow.
- Insert and Engage the Link
Clean and thoroughly lubricate both 600 ampere interfaces of the Link with ELASTIMOLD supplied lubricant. Align the Link so it is perpendicular to the switch faceplate when inserted into the bushing extender and elbow. Insert the Link into the bushing extender and elbow, ensuring both lever arms are inside the alignment bracket legs. Engage the pivot pin into the slots in the alignment bracket legs. While pushing inward, use a hot stick to move the lever arms downward, engaging the roller pin and moving the Link inward. Continue until lever arms are perpendicular to the alignment bracket leg.
- Ground System and Connect Mating Product
Ground the elbow: Feed #14 AWG or #12 AWG solid copper wire through the grounding eye on the elbow, twist tight, and connect to ground. Clean and lubricate the 200 amp interface on the Link. Ground, then install the desired 200 amp mating product onto the 200 amp interface per its specific installation instructions. Ground the cable: If using concentric neutral cable, twist neutral wires together and connect to ground. If using 20MA or 21MA grounding devices, connect the ground lead to ground. For three-phase installations, tie all grounds from all three phases to a common ground point.
