How to Install the LINK-C Deadbreak Cam Link Operable Connector System

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the LINK-C 600 amp deadbreak cam link operable connector system. It covers mounting, wiring, and securing components for high voltage applications.

Estimated time: 2h

Tools needed:

600ATM Operating Tool, Hot Stick, Torque Wrench, Suitable 1 inch Hex Tool, Welding Equipment

Supplies needed:

ELASTIMOLD Lubricant, 600 Amp Elbow, Stand-Off Plug, 3/8-16 x 2 inch Studs (3), Hex Nuts (6), Lockwashers (3), Bushing Extender, Retainer Contact, Epoxy Standoff Plug, Alignment Bracket, Bushing Extender Clamp, Elbow Clamp, Clamp Hardware (Hex Bolts, Lock Washers), LINK-C Connector, #14 or #12 AWG Solid Copper Wire, Appropriate Grounding Connector, HV Insulated Cap(s) or Connector(s), Mating 200 Amp Product

  1. Prepare for Installation and Ensure Safety

Before starting, ensure all apparatus is de-energized. Verify package contents are complete and undamaged, and all components fit correctly with the cable and mating products. Have all required tools and supplies at hand, and maintain cleanliness. If the product has shipping covers, remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated caps or connectors before energizing or submerging. This product must be installed only by competent personnel trained in high voltage electrical safety practices. Failure to follow these instructions will result in damage to the product and serious or fatal injury.

  2. Install 600 Amp Elbow and Stand-Off Plug

Install the 600 amp elbow onto the cable according to its specific installation instructions, ensuring it will align with the stand-off plug. If applicable, weld three 3/8-16 x 2” studs to the equipment faceplate per customer standard practice. Install three hex nuts onto the studs to support the stand-off plug in line with the bushing. Place the stand-off plug over the studs, resting on the nuts or spacers. Secure with a lockwasher and hex nut on each stud, tightening to 12 ft-lbs torque. Verify the top surfaces of the bushing and stand-off plug are in-line.

  3. Install Bushing Extender and Elbow onto Standoff Plug

Clean and thoroughly lubricate the apparatus bushing and both interfaces of the 600 amp bushing extender with ELASTIMOLD lubricant. Install the bushing extender onto the apparatus bushing. Insert the 600ATM into the retainer contact, engage the internal hex broach, and thread into the apparatus bushing using a suitable tool, torquing to 50-60 ft-lbs. Next, clean and lubricate the epoxy standoff plug and both interfaces of the 600 amp elbow. Install the elbow onto the epoxy standoff plug. Insert the 600AMT into the retainer contact, engage the internal hex broach, and thread into the epoxy standoff plug, torquing to 50-60 ft-lbs.

  4. Mount and Align the Alignment Bracket

Remove the bushing extender clamp and elbow clamp from the alignment bracket. Position the alignment bracket on the bushing extender 2.5 inches (63.5mm) from the grounding eye. Assemble the bushing extender clamp to the alignment bracket with the supplied hardware, torquing by alternating sides until the clamp tabs are flush with each other and tight on both sides. Position the elbow in the alignment bracket such that the elbow cuff is lined up evenly with the bushing extender cuff. Assemble the elbow clamp to the alignment bracket with the supplied hardware, torquing by alternating sides until the clamp tabs are flush and tight. Ensure the elbow clamp notch faces the cable entrance of the elbow.

  5. Insert and Secure the LINK-C Connector

Clean and thoroughly lubricate both 600 ampere interfaces of the LINK-C connector with ELASTIMOLD lubricant. Align the LINK-C connector so it is perpendicular to the switch faceplate when inserted. Insert the LINK-C connector into the bushing extender and elbow, ensuring both lever arms are on the inside of the alignment bracket legs. Engage the pivot pin into the slots in the alignment bracket legs. While pushing inward, use a hot stick eye to move the lever arms downward, engaging the roller pin and moving the LINK-C connector inward. Continue moving the lever arms until they are perpendicular to the alignment bracket leg.

  6. Ground the System and Install Mating Products

Ground the elbow by feeding a #14 AWG or #12 AWG solid copper wire through the grounding eye, twisting it tight, and connecting it to ground. Clean and lubricate the 200 amp interface on the LINK-C connector. Ground and then install the desired mating product on the 200 amp interface according to its specific installation instructions. Ground the cable: if concentric neutral cable is used, twist the concentric neutral wires together and connect to ground using an appropriate connector; if 20MA or 21MA grounding devices are used, connect the ground lead from the device to ground using a suitable connector. For three-phase installations, all grounds from all three phases must be tied to a common ground point.
