How to Install the 63160 Compression Tap

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 63160 Compression Tap, ensuring safe and effective electrical connections.

Estimated time: 45m

Tools needed:

Screwdriver, Wire strippers, Multimeter

Supplies needed:

Mounting screws, Terminal connectors, ALUMA-SHIELD® Aluminum Joint Compound

  1. Prepare the cable

Strip the insulation from the cable using a whittling technique, being careful not to nick the strands. Clean the aluminum cable with a wire brush or emery cloth to remove any surface oxide.

  2. Apply joint compound

Smear a thin layer of ALUMA-SHIELD® Aluminum Joint Compound on the stripped aluminum cable. Ensure that the Main and Branch grooves of the connector are not disturbed.

  3. Insert and crimp the connector

Center the stripped cable in the Main or Branch grooves of the connector. Close the FILLERLOK™ tab and use the appropriate crimping tool to make compressions between the color bands on the connector, starting from the center and working outward.

  4. Inspect the connection

After crimping, inspect the connection for any sharp edges or burrs and remove them to ensure a safe installation.

  5. Insulate the connection

Follow the insulation methods outlined in the installation table to properly insulate the crimped connection.
