Overview

The ABB 61171 is a compact, one-hole aluminum equipment lug designed for reliable electrical connections in industrial applications up to 35 kV. Manufactured by ABB Installation Products, this lug features a short barrel and blind end mounting type, ensuring a secure connection for 500 kcmil wire. The lug is constructed from high-conductivity wrought aluminum with a tin-plated finish to inhibit corrosion, making it suitable for harsh environments. It comes factory pre-filled with joint compound and is sealed with an easy pull-out end plug for corrosion protection and ready-to-use installation. The barrel is marked with the Die Code 87H and a brown color code, indicating compatibility with specific crimping tools and dies for proper crimp die selection. The lug is cULus listed to 35 kV and temperature rated to 90°C when crimped with specified tools. Its compact design and one-hole configuration simplify installation, making it a versatile choice for electrical contractors and engineers requiring durable and precise termination solutions. The 1/2-inch bolt size ensures compatibility with standard mounting hardware. This equipment lug is specifically designed for use with 500 kcmil wire, offering a robust termination solution. The tin plating on the aluminum lug provides enhanced conductivity and protection against oxidation. The blind end design of the lug prevents the insertion of the conductor beyond the intended termination point, ensuring a consistent and reliable crimp. The Neoprene insulating cover provides an additional layer of protection and insulation for the terminated connection. The 61171 lug is engineered for applications requiring high voltage insulation up to 35 kV, meeting stringent industry standards for safety and performance. The Die Code 87H and brown color code are critical identifiers for ensuring the correct crimping die is used, which is essential for achieving optimal electrical and mechanical performance of the connection. The compact size of the lug facilitates installation in space-constrained electrical enclosures. SKU: 61171. UNSPSC Code: 39121405.

How to Install the 61171 Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 61171 connector, ensuring a secure and safe electrical connection.

Estimated time: 45m

Tools needed:

Screwdriver, Wire strippers, Multimeter

Supplies needed:

Mounting screws, Terminal connectors, ALUMA-SHIELD® Aluminum Joint Compound, TY-RAP® cable ties

  1. Prepare the cable

Strip the cable insulation to the length specified in Table 1, ensuring not to nick the cable strands.

  2. Insert the cable

Insert the stripped cable into the small hole end of the insulating cover and slide it until it is beyond the stripped area.

  3. Apply joint compound

Smear a thin layer of ALUMA-SHIELD® Aluminum Joint Compound on the cable and clean it with a wire brush or emery cloth to remove surface oxide.

  4. Crimp the connector

Remove the protective cap from the connector barrel and insert the cable until it stops. Use the correct installing die to compress the connector, starting near the tongue and working towards the end.

  5. Connect the lug

Connect the crimped lug to the equipment, ensuring a secure fit.

  6. Secure the insulating cover

Slide the insulating cover onto the lug until it stops and use pliers to secure a TY-RAP® cable tie to the cable insulation flush with the back end of the insulating cover.

  7. Verify the installation

Use a multimeter to check the connection for continuity and ensure there are no shorts.
