Overview

The ABB Figure 6 Copper Compression Ground Tap Connector (SKU: 54865-CKN) is a heavy-duty copper connector designed for grounding applications where a 5/8-inch ground rod must connect to a 3/0 AWG stranded conductor or a 250 kcmil cable. This compression-style connector ensures a secure, low-resistance bond between the ground rod and tap conductor, meeting NEC and UL requirements for electrical safety and system integrity. Installation requires pre-crimping the ground rod using ABB Die 15506SS (45H) before attaching the tap conductor. The connector’s dimensions—1.5 inches in width and 2.1875 inches in height—provide ample clearance for standard grounding setups while maintaining structural rigidity. The copper construction delivers superior conductivity and corrosion resistance, ensuring long-term performance in outdoor and industrial environments. This connector is ideal for utility substations, commercial buildings, industrial facilities, and renewable energy installations where reliable grounding is critical. It supports applications requiring compliance with NEC Article 250 and UL 467 standards for grounding and bonding. The compression design eliminates the need for welding or soldering, reducing installation time and labor costs while improving consistency in joint integrity.

How to Install the 54865-CKN Ground Grid Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for safely installing the 54865-CKN ground grid connector onto a ground rod and cable, ensuring compliance with IEEE 837-2014.

Estimated time: 15m

Tools needed:

Rough cloth or brush, Wire brush, Hydraulic crimping tool (e.g., 13100A, TBM14M, TBM15 series, Y750/Y35/Y39, Y45, Y46), Crimping die 15526 (45H), Crimping die 15506, Optional: Knurling tool 240-31565-94

Supplies needed:

54865-CKN Ground Grid Connector, 5/8 inch Ground Rod, 3/0 STR-250 MCM Cable

  1. Ensure Safety and Prepare Ground Rod

WARNING: Risk of shock, disconnect power before installation. CAUTION: This product should be installed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes. Ensure all power is disconnected from the area. Drive the ground rod to its final depth before proceeding with connector installation.

  2. Pre-Crimp the Ground Rod

For 54865-CKN, to comply with IEEE 837-2014, the 5/8 inch ground rod must be pre-crimped. If the ground rod is smooth, optionally use knurling tool 240-31565-94. Then, using a hydraulic crimping tool and die 15526 (45H), pre-crimp the ground rod as shown in Figure 1 of the documentation.

  3. Prepare the Cable

Clean the cable thoroughly with a rough cloth or brush to remove all visible dirt. Follow this by using a wire brush or similar process to achieve a bright copper finish on the cable ends.

  4. Insert Cable into Connector

Carefully insert the cleaned cable into the 54865-CKN connector. Ensure that the cable end(s) protrude at least 3/4 inch beyond the connector opening.

  5. Crimp the Connector

Using a suitable hydraulic crimping tool (e.g., 13100A, TBM15 series) and the specified die 15506, perform three crimps on the connector as illustrated in Figure 2 of the documentation to securely fasten the cable and ground rod connection.
