How to Install the 151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the 151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle, designed to connect solid dielectric type cables to other electrical apparatus or cables. Ensure all safety precautions are followed.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Cable cutting tool, Cable stripping tool, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Rag, Approved solvent

Supplies needed:

151SR/K151SR Straight Receptacle kit (includes conductor contact, nylon venting rod, lubricant), Elastimold bail, #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire, Silicone grease, Elastimold insulating plug (K150DP, if not immediately connecting)

  1. Prepare the Cable Jacket

DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before beginning installation. Failure to do so can result in serious injury or death. For jacketed concentric neutral cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the cable end. Ensure sufficient neutral wires remain for grounding. For copper tape shield cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 7 1/2 inches from the cable end. Then, remove the copper tape shield 6 1/2 inches from the cable end. (Note: If using an ECS or MA grounding device, follow its specific instructions for outer jacket cut back).

  2. Remove Insulation and Conductive Shield

Remove 7/8 to 1 inch of cable insulation and conductive shield. For #1 stranded/compressed and #1/0 compressed/solid aluminum cable, remove 1 3/4 to 1 7/8 inches. Cut squarely; do not pencil the cut. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately after stripping.

  3. Crimp the Conductor Contact

Immediately insert the wire-brushed conductor into the crimp barrel, ensuring it is fully seated. The crimp barrel contains inhibitor. Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor. Start crimps at the crimp line imprinted on the barrel and rotate each successive crimp or indent 90 degrees. Refer to the crimp chart provided with the contact. If using aluminum cable, carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.

  4. Prepare and Clean the Cable Insulation

Remove the semi-conductive shield to a point 7 9/16 to 7 5/8 inches back from the end of the pin with a straight, smooth, 'squared' cut. DO NOT CUT OR NICK THE INSULATION. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of semi-conducting residue. Wipe with a rag wet with an approved solvent, always wiping from the end of the cable toward the outer jacket. If using an ECS or MA grounding device, install it now following its specific instructions.

  5. Lubricate the Receptacle and Cable

Remove the protective cap from the straight receptacle, keeping the cable insulation and receptacle clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable (at the end of the insulation) and to the inside of the receptacle housing. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may harm the product or its mating product.

  6. Insert Cable into the Receptacle Housing

Push the cable into the receptacle housing until the base of the pin chamfer is flush with the inside face of the receptacle. IMPORTANT: If the receptacle is not to be immediately connected, replace the protective cover. Note that the shipping cover only offers protection from dirt and is NOT an insulating device. If insulation is required, obtain an Elastimold insulating plug (K150DP).

  7. Connect to a Mating Plug (Optional)

Lubricate the nose of the mating plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approximately 1 3/4 inches). Ensure the nylon rod is not cut during mating. Insert the mating plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection with an Elastimold bail. CAUTION: A bailing arrangement is required when this product is used with any mating Elastimold deadbreak product.

  8. Ground the Cable

If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not being used, connect a length of customer-supplied #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Connect this grounding assembly of the connector to the system ground by merging it with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
