This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the K151SP Straight Plug, designed to connect solid dielectric type cables to other ELASTIMOLD products on 15kV and 25kV class systems. Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before beginning installation.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Wire brush, Rag, Approved solvent, Measuring tape, Cable cutting tool
Supplies needed:
K151SP Straight Plug, Conductor Contact (female), Nylon Venting Rod, Lubricant (supplied), Crimp Chart, Solid dielectric type cable, Mating ELASTIMOLD receptacle, Copper wire (#14 AWG or equivalent), ELASTIMOLD bail, Silicone grease
- De-energize Apparatus and Inspect Components
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus are de-energized before installation or removal. Install and operate according to user, local, and national work rules. Inspect all K151SP package contents for completeness and damage. Verify all components fit properly with the cable and mating products. Do not touch or move energized products.
- Prepare Cable Jacket
For Jacketed Concentric Neutral cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 8 inches from the cable end, allowing sufficient neutral wires for grounding. For Copper Tape Shield cable, cut and remove the cable jacket 7-1/2 inches from the cable end, then remove the copper tape shield 6-1/2 inches from the cable end. Refer to ECS or MA grounding device instructions for specific cut-back requirements if applicable.
- Remove Insulation and Conductive Shield
Remove 7/8 to 1 inch of cable insulation and conductive shield, cutting squarely without penciling. For #1 stranded/compressed and #1/0 compressed/solid aluminum cable, remove 1-3/4 to 1-7/8 inches. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors immediately and insert into the crimp barrel containing inhibitor.
- Crimp Socket Terminal
Crimp the socket terminal onto the bared conductor, holding the crimp barrel against the cable insulation. Refer to the crimp chart provided with the contact. Start crimps at the imprinted crimp line and rotate each successive crimp or indent 90 degrees. Carefully wipe any excess inhibitor from the contact and cable insulation.
- Prepare and Clean Insulation
Temporarily remove the plastic pin. Remove the semi-conductive shield 7-3/4 to 7-13/16 inches back from the end of the socket with a straight, smooth, squared cut, ensuring not to cut or nick the insulation. Replace the plastic pin. Pencil the insulation 1/8 inch. Clean the outer jacket and thoroughly clean the insulation with an approved solvent, wiping from the cable end toward the outer jacket. Install ECS or MA grounding device if applicable.
- Lubricate Cable and Housing
Slide the collar, smaller end first, onto the cable. Keep the cable insulation and plug clean. Apply the supplied lubricant sparingly to the cable as shown in the instructions and to the inside of the housing. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE lubricants, as others may be harmful to the product.
- Install Plug on Cable
Push the cable into the housing until the leading edge of the socket contact is flush with the front edge of the plug. Remove the plastic pin from the socket and discard it.
- Connect to Mating Receptacle
Lubricate the nose of the plug with silicone grease. Place the nylon rod into the receptacle face until it bottoms (approx. 1-3/4 inches), taking care not to cut the rod. Insert the plug assembly into the receptacle as far as possible. Pull out the nylon rod. Secure the electrical connection using an ELASTIMOLD bail, referencing the Bailing Instruction Sheet (150TB-4).
- Connect Grounding
If an ELASTIMOLD grounding device is not used, connect a length of #14 AWG (or equivalent) copper wire through the grounding tab and twist tightly. Connect this grounding assembly to the system ground by merging it with the cable shield of each cable. Seal the grounding wires and connections to prevent corrosion.
