This guide provides instructions for installing the 13713 interchangeable die set into T&B 15 Ton tools and using it to crimp T&B insulation piercing splices and terminals on magnet wire.
Estimated time: 20m
Tools needed:
T&B 15 Ton Hydraulic Crimping Tool (TBM15I or BPLT15BSCR), Hydraulic Pump (compatible with crimping tool), Safety Glasses
Supplies needed:
T&B 13713 Die Set (Nest and Indentor halves), T&B Insulation Piercing Splices and Terminals (2200XX Series), Magnet Wire (50 to 238 MCM), Lubricant
- Review Safety and Lubricate Dies
Before installation, read and understand all safety warnings pertaining to your crimping tool and connectors. Apply lubricant to the nest and indentor halves of the 13713 die set as indicated in Figure 1 of the original documentation to ensure smooth operation and longevity. WARNING: Never attempt to make a connection to a 'hot' line. Always ensure power is OFF and no electrical hazard exists before working. Wear safety glasses.
- Install the Die Set into the Crimping Tool
Ensure the hydraulic crimping tool is disconnected from its power supply. Laterally slide the nest half (2) of the die set into the frame die cavity (1) of the tool until it locks in place. Then, laterally slide the indentor half (3) into the piston die cavity (4) of the tool until it locks. Ensure both halves are securely seated. CAUTION: Never operate the tool without a set of dies installed. Keep hands clear of dies when operating the tool.
- Prepare and Insert the Connector
Select the appropriate T&B insulation piercing connector for your magnet wire combination, referring to the connector's instruction sheet for information on wire sizes, number of wires, and proper connectors. Insert the chosen connector into the die nest (2) with the connector rib aligned in the die nest side wall grooves, and the open end of the connector facing outward as shown in Figure 3 of the original documentation.
- Crimp the Connector
With the connector properly seated and the magnet wire prepared according to the connector's instructions, depress the foot or hand control switch of your hydraulic crimping tool to crimp the connector. Refer to your tool and pump manuals for specific operating instructions. Ensure the crimp is complete. WARNING: Keep hands clear of dies when operating the tool. AVOID ALL BODILY CONTACT WITH HOSE WHILE HYDRAULIC PRESSURE IS BEING APPLIED.
- Maintain the Die Set and Tool
After use, disconnect the pump from the power supply. Keep the die set and tool clean, free of chips and other foreign material from the working areas and mating surfaces. Periodically inspect the dies for damage such as cracks, chips, or excessive wear, and replace or repair as necessary to maintain optimal performance and safety.
