How to Set Up and Prepare the 13700A C-Yoke Crimping Tool

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for connecting the 13700A C-Yoke crimping head to a hydraulic pump, installing the crimping dies, and preparing the hydraulic system for operation.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Safety Glasses, Wrench, Hex Key or Screwdriver

Supplies needed:

Hydraulic Pump, Hydraulic Hose, Appropriate Die Set, Thomas & Betts Hydraulic Fluid (Cat. No. 21061), Thomas & Betts Connectors (UL and/or CSA listed)

  1. Prioritize Safety

Read and understand all instructions and safety information in the manual before operating or servicing the tool. Wear safety glasses and ensure your work area is clean and well-lit.

  2. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the hydraulic pump from its power supply before connecting the tool, installing or removing dies, or performing any maintenance or service.

  3. Prepare Hydraulic System

Ensure the hydraulic pump and hose are filled with clean Thomas & Betts Cat. No. 21061 hydraulic oil. If necessary, flush and refill the system. Protect couplers with dust covers when not in use to prevent the introduction of foreign matter into the unit.

  4. Connect Crimping Head to Pump

Remove dust caps from both the tool's coupling and the hydraulic hose's output coupling. Connect the tool to the output hose by tightening the couplings together. Ensure all hose connections are snug and leak-free, but do not overtighten to avoid distorting threads.

  5. Select and Insert Adapters

Select the appropriate die set for the connector you intend to crimp, referring to the instruction sheets enclosed with the dies and connectors. Insert the necessary adapters into the tool head. Tighten the set screws to secure the adapters firmly in place.

  6. Install Crimping Dies

Push the retaining pin on the adapter and slide the selected die halves into the adapters. Ensure the dies are properly seated. Never operate the tool without a set of dies installed, as this can cause damage and possible operator injury. Keep hands clear of dies when operating the tool.

  7. Bleed the Hydraulic System

With the dies in place, reconnect the pump to its power supply. Operate the system several times by fully advancing and retracting the tool's ram to remove any entrapped air. Position the pump as the highest point in the system for optimum air removal. This cycling will also warm the fluid and lubricate the system before being heavily loaded.

  8. Verify Operation

Turn on the pump's power supply. Operate the tool several times without a connector to check for proper operation and to ensure there are no leaks in the hydraulic system.

  9. Prepare for Crimping

Select the correct Thomas & Betts connector (UL and/or CSA listed) and the wire(s) to be crimped. Insert the connector with the wire(s) into the die nest. Ensure the pump develops proper pressure prior to making the desired crimps, referring to the pump manual for instructions.

  10. Perform Crimp

Operate the hydraulic pump using the foot or hand control switch to make the crimp. Keep hands clear of the dies during operation to prevent serious injury. Turn the pump off to retract the tool's ram after the crimp is complete.
