How to Install the Elastimold 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the Elastimold 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector, including cable preparation, elbow assembly, grounding, and connection to a deadbreak bushing.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Cable cutter, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wrench, Pliers, Hot stick, Suitable voltage sensing device

Supplies needed:

Elastimold 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector, UD Cable, Compression Lug, Probe, Lubricant (supplied), Hold-down Bail, No. 14 AWG copper wire, Appropriate ground connector, Cleaning solution, Silicone grease

  1. Prepare for Installation and Safety Checks

Before starting, ensure all apparatus in the work area are de-energized. Inspect all components of the 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector for damage, correct rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Verify the elbow housing cable entrance size and compression lug size match your cable. Test the probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug; replace any damaged components. Gather all required tools and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Prepare the UD Cable

Train the UD cable to ease operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches (508mm) extends beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut any excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing. Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches (216mm) back from the cable end. Carefully remove the cable shield and insulation, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating it to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Wipe off any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable. Remove the semi-con shield and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (3.2mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  3. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Clean and lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing using only the supplied lubricant; do not use substitutes. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion, then wipe off any excess silicone lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.

  4. Install the Hold-Down Bail and Grounding

Place the hold-down bail into the hold-down bracket. Using a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, ensuring not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, providing adequate slack for elbow operation.

  5. Connect Elbow to Bushing

WARNING: Ensure the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized before proceeding with lubrication and connection. Clean the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing, then lubricate both with the supplied lubricant. Use a fully insulated hot stick to place the elbow onto the bushing; do not operate by hand or attempt to separate if energized.

  6. Secure the Elbow

Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown or top of the elbow so that the eyebolt on the bail is directly over the operating eye. Tighten down on the elbow locator by turning the eyebolt in a clockwise direction. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt until it allows the eyebolt to seat securely in the locator. The nut should act as a stop to prevent the eyebolt from applying excessive force on the elbow.

  7. Perform Voltage Test (Optional Safety Check)

WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device and is not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Use a suitable sensing device designed for separable connectors with capacitive test points and follow its manufacturer's directions. Contamination, moisture, or incorrect equipment can provide a false 'no voltage' indication on an energized elbow. Treat the elbow as energized until the 'no voltage' indication is confirmed by other means to prevent serious or fatal injury. To perform the test, remove the test point cap with a hot stick, peeling it off at an angle. Test for voltage using the suitable sensing device. After voltage detection, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
