How to Install 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors, designed to terminate UD cable with concentric neutral and semi-con shielding. It covers cable preparation, elbow assembly, grounding, and connection to a 25kV class deadbreak bushing.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hot stick, Wire strippers, Cable cut back template

Supplies needed:

252LR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Contact, Lubricant (supplied with connector), Hold-down Bail, UD cable (with concentric neutral and semi-con shielding), No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, Appropriate ground connector, HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if replacing shipping covers), Test point cap (if not installed)

  1. Prepare the Cable for Termination

Train cable to ease operation, ensuring at least 20 inches (508.0mm) beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing. Unwrap and bind concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches (216.0mm) back from the cable end. Remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread inhibitor, ensuring the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Wipe off excessive inhibitor. Remove the semi-con shield and bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (3.2mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.

  2. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Clean and lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Keep insulation free of dirt. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off any excess silicone lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. Tighten the probe with a wrench until the wrench bends. If a test point cap is not installed, lubricate the cap and test point, then install the cap.

  3. Connect Concentric Neutral and Assemble Bail

Using a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector, providing adequate slack for elbow operation. Place the hold-down bail into the hold-down bracket, compress the bail, and insert it into the brackets.

  4. Connect Elbow to Bushing and Secure

DANGER: Ensure the transformer and elbow are de-energized before proceeding. Clean the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing, then lubricate with the supplied lubricant. Use a fully insulated hot stick to place the elbow onto the bushing. Do not operate by hand or separate if energized. Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown of the elbow so the eyebolt is directly over the operating eye. Tighten the eyebolt clockwise to secure the elbow locator. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt to allow it to seat securely in the locator, acting as a stop to prevent excessive force.
