How to Install the 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the Elastimold 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connector, designed to terminate UD cable with concentric neutral and semi-con shielding. It covers cable preparation, elbow assembly, and connection to a 25kV class deadbreak bushing.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Hot stick, Wire strippers
Supplies needed:
252LR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Contact, Lubricant (supplied), Hold-down Bail, No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire, Appropriate ground connector, UD cable, Elastimold 25kV class 200 ampere deadbreak bushing or accessory device
- Perform Initial Safety Checks and Prepare Components
DANGER: Ensure all apparatus is de-energized before starting installation. Do not touch or move energized products. Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility with mating parts. Verify the elbow housing cable entrance size and compression lug size match your cable. Check probe threads by hand-threading into the compression lug; replace damaged components if resistance is encountered. Have all required tools ready and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.
- Train the Cable
Train the UD cable to ease operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches (508.0mm) extends beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut any excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing.
- Prepare the Cable End
Unwrap and bind concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches (216.0mm) back from the cable end. Remove the shield and insulation squarely, taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Align the lug's threaded hole with the bushing bore and crimp according to the crimp chart, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe off excessive inhibitor. Remove the semi-con shield and bevel the insulation end 1/8 inch (3.2mm) maximum. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue.
- Assemble the Elbow Connector
Clean and lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable using a back and forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess silicone lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, ensuring not to cross-thread. Tighten the probe with a wrench until the wrench bends.
- Assemble the Hold-down Bail
Place the hold-down bail into the hold-down bracket. Compress the bail and insert it securely into the brackets.
- Connect the Concentric Neutral
Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Ensure adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.
- Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug
Clean the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing, and lubricate with the supplied lubricant ONLY if both the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Use a fully insulated hot stick to place the elbow onto the bushing. DANGER: Do not operate by hand or separate if energized.
- Secure the Elbow with the Bail
Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown or top of the elbow so that the eyebolt on the bail is directly over the operating eye. Tighten down on the elbow locator by turning the eyebolt clockwise. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt to allow it to seat securely in the locator, acting as a stop to prevent excessive force on the elbow. Once set, the nut will not require readjustment for future removal/replacement.
