How to Install the ABB TF96-51 Thermal Overload Relay
Step-by-step guide to mounting and wiring the TF96-51 thermal overload relay for motor protection.
Estimated time: 20m
Tools needed:
Screwdriver, Crimping tool (if using ferrules)
Supplies needed:
Mounting screws, Conductors (6-50mm²), Fuses (125A, gG type), DIN rail (if using mounting kit)
- Prepare the mounting surface
Ensure the mounting surface is clean and flat. For contactor mounting, align the TF96-51 with the AF80 or AF96 block contactor. For DIN rail installation, attach the single mounting kit to the relay and secure to a 35mm DIN rail.
- Connect the main circuit
Insert rigid or flexible conductors (6-50mm²) into the main circuit terminals. Tighten screws to 6-9Nm torque. Ensure the short-circuit protective device (125A, gG type fuse) is installed upstream.
- Wire the auxiliary contacts
Connect the NC (95-96) and NO (97-98) contacts to your control circuit. The NC contact opens on overload, while the NO contact can be used for remote indication. Verify wiring complies with IEC/EN 60947 standards.
- Set the current range and reset mode
Adjust the current setting to match your motor's rated current (40-51A). Select manual or automatic reset using the reset selector on the front panel. For manual reset, press the reset button after a trip event.
- Test the installation
Use the TEST function to verify relay operation. Apply a simulated overload to confirm the trip mechanism activates and the contacts switch positions. Check for proper trip indication on the front panel.
