How to Modify and Install QUICK TRAY PRO™ Cable Tray Sections
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for cutting, bending, joining, and supporting QUICK TRAY PRO™ Cable Tray sections to create a custom cable management system.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
QTPBC Side Action Bolt Cutter, Measuring Tape, Marker
Supplies needed:
QUICK TRAY PRO™ Cable Tray sections (e.g., QTPRWB24), QTPBNWK/QTPBNWKBLK Splice Kits, QTPSSW3/QTPSSW3BLK Splice Washers, QTPUS10/QTPUS10BLK Universal Splice Bar (optional), QTP90TKIT/QTP90TKITBLK T-Connection or 90o Splice Bar (optional), Cable Tray Supports
- Plan Your Cable Tray Layout
Before cutting or bending, carefully plan the desired cable tray configuration. Review the cutting patterns provided in the manual for specific bends, tees, or elbows to ensure correct wire removal for your chosen tray width and desired shape.
- Cut Cable Tray Wires
Use the Hoffman side action bolt cutter (QTPBC) to make precise cuts. For side wires, position the cutting jaws on the cradle wire and cut at an angle away from the new end. For bottom wires, turn the tray over, rest the jaws on the cradle wire, and cut at an angle away from the new end. Make one clean cut to eliminate grinding or touch-up.
- Form a 90-degree Bend
At the desired bend location, cut all side wires according to the specific cutting pattern for your tray size. Turn the tray on the uncut side and smoothly bend it up until the inside edges closest to the uncut side meet. Secure the bend using QTPBNWK/QTPBNWKBLK Splice Kits and QTPSSW3/QTPSSW3BLK Splice Washers at the indicated locations for the tray width.
- Join Cable Tray Sections
Connect straight sections, elbows, or tees using QTPBNWK/QTPBNWKBLK Splice Kits and QTPSSW3/QTPSSW3BLK Splice Washers. For elbows, align the wires of the two trays at the desired angle and fasten with two splice kits and washers per joint. For a 90-degree tee, cut the side wires from the tray forming the top of the tee, then align and fasten with splice kits and washers.
- Install Cable Tray Supports
Place straight section supports at typical 6-foot (1.5m) centers. Ensure supports are within 24 inches (610mm) of any splice on straight sections, and the span between supports should not exceed the length of the tray. Install additional supports around bends and wherever the cable tray level changes.
