How to Install and Customize Hoffman QUICK TRAY PRO™ Cable Tray

This guide provides detailed instructions for cutting, bending, and connecting Hoffman QUICK TRAY PRO™ cable tray sections to create custom cable routing solutions. Learn to form various bends, elbows, and tees, and properly support your installation.

Estimated time: 2h

Tools needed:

Hoffman Side Action Bolt Cutter (QTPBC)

Supplies needed:

QUICK TRAY PRO™ Cable Tray sections (e.g., QTP6X20BLK), Splice Kits (QTPBNWK/QTPBNWKBLK), Splice Washers (QTPSSW3/QTPSSW3BLK), Universal Splice Bars (QTPUS10/QTPUS10BLK), T-Connection or 90o Splice Bars (QTP90TKIT/QTP90TKITBLK), Cable Tray Supports

  1. Plan Your Cable Tray Configuration

Review your desired cable routing path and determine the necessary straight sections, cuts, bends, elbows, and tees. For bends, refer to the specific cutting patterns provided in the manual for your tray size and desired bend type (90-degree, large radius, or level change). For elbows and tees, identify the required cutting patterns and connection points.

  2. Cut Cable Tray Sections

Always use the Hoffman side action bolt cutter (QTPBC) to ensure precision cuts and minimize sharp edges that could snag cables. Position the cutting jaws on the cradle wire for each cut. Start by cutting the top side wire, angling away from the new end. Proceed to cut the remaining side wires, maintaining the angle and resting the jaws on the cradle wire. Turn the tray over and cut the bottom wires from the underside, again resting the jaws on the cradle wire and angling away from the new end. Make one clean cut for each wire to eliminate grinding or touch-up.

  3. Form Bends, Elbows, or Tees

To create a 90-degree bend, cut the side and bottom wires according to the pattern for your tray width, then smoothly bend the tray until the inside edges meet and secure with Splice Kits and Splice Washers. For large radius bends, remove wires from the outside and bottom of every other mesh section, then bend the tray and fasten. To form an elbow, cut side wires from two tray sections, align them at the desired angle, and fasten with Splice Kits and Splice Washers. For a 90-degree tee, cut side wires from one tray section, align with another, and fasten using Splice Kits and Splice Washers, potentially with a T-Connection Splice Bar. For a Y-junction tee, cut both tray sections, bend side wires to 45 degrees, and connect using universal connectors, Splice Kits, and Splice Washers. To change levels, remove every other side wire section at the bend location from both sides of the tray, then smoothly bend the tray up or down. To reduce width, cut side and bottom wires, then connect with Universal Splice Bars.

  4. Connect Tray Sections

Join different cable tray sizes or modified sections using the appropriate splice kits and splice bars. For straight connections, use QTPBNWK/QTPBNWKBLK Splice Kits and QTPSSW3/QTPSSW3BLK Splice Washers to securely fasten sections together. For additional support and stability, especially when connecting tray sections or forming complex configurations, utilize QTPUS10/QTPUS10BLK Universal Splice Bars, which can be cut to fit and bent as needed.

  5. Install Supports for the Cable Tray

Install straight section supports at typical 6-foot (1.5m) centers to ensure proper load distribution. Place supports within 24 inches (610mm) of any splice on straight sections, and ensure the span between supports does not exceed the length of the tray. Install additional supports around all bends and wherever the cable tray level changes to maintain stability and prevent sagging under cable load.
