How to Install and Modify QUICK TRAY PRO™ Cable Tray
This guide provides instructions for cutting, bending, and connecting QUICK TRAY PRO™ cable tray sections, including the QTP4X8BLK model, to create a custom cable management system.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
QTPBC Side Action Bolt Cutter
Supplies needed:
QUICK TRAY PRO™ Straight Sections (e.g., QTP4X8BLK), QTPBNWK Splice Kit, QTPBNWKBLK Splice Kit, QTPSSW3 Splice Washer, QTPSSW3BLK Splice Washer, QTPUS10 Universal Splice Bar, QTPUS10BLK Universal Splice Bar, QTP90TKIT T-Connection or 90o Splice Bar, QTP90TKITBLK T-Connection or 90o Splice Bar
- Plan Your Cable Tray Layout and Modifications
Before cutting, carefully review the desired cable tray configuration, including bends, tees, and width reductions. Refer to the specific cutting patterns provided in the manual for your tray size and intended modification (e.g., 90-degree bend, elbow, tee).
- Cut Cable Tray Sections to Size
Use the Hoffman side action bolt cutter (QTPBC) to make all cuts. For side wires, position the cutting jaws on the cradle wire and cut at an angle away from the new end. For bottom wires, turn the tray over, rest the jaws on the cradle wire, and cut at an angle away from the new end. Ensure each cut is clean to prevent snagging and corrosion.
- Form Bends or Junctions
To create a 90-degree bend, cut all side wires at the bend location according to the cutting pattern for your tray width. Turn the tray on the uncut side and smoothly bend it until the inside edges meet. For other configurations like large radius bends, elbows, or tees, follow the specific cutting and bending instructions provided in the manual for each type of junction.
- Secure Tray Sections and Connections
Fasten connected tray sections and formed bends using QTPBNWK/QTPBNWKBLK Splice Kits and QTPSSW3/QTPSSW3BLK Splice Washers. For additional support or specific connections like Y-junctions or width reductions, utilize QTPUS10/QTPUS10BLK Universal Splice Bars or QTP90TKIT/QTP90TKITBLK T-Connection Splice Bars as required, ensuring all components are securely bolted.
- Install Supports and Route Cables
Install straight section supports at typical 6-foot (1.5m) centers, ensuring supports are within 24 inches (610mm) of any splice. Additional supports are required around bends and where the cable tray level changes. Once the tray system is fully installed and secured, route cables into and out of the tray through the large 2x4 inch mesh openings, ensuring the fill ratio complies with NEC 392.9 (B) guidelines.
