- Plan the Cable Tray Layout and Mark Cuts
Determine the required configuration for your cable management system, including straight runs, bends, elbows, or tees. Review the specific cutting patterns provided in the manual for your tray size (e.g., QTP2X20BLK) and desired modifications, carefully marking the wires that need to be removed.
- Cut Cable Tray Sections
Use the Hoffman side action bolt cutter (QTPBC) to make precise cuts. Begin by positioning the cutting jaws on the cradle wire of the top side wire and cut at an angle away from the new end. Repeat this process for all remaining side wires. Then, turn the tray over and cut the bottom wires from the underside, always resting the cutting jaws on the cradle wire and cutting at an angle away from the new end. Ensure each cut is clean to minimize sharp edges and protect against corrosion.
- Form Tray Modifications (Bends, Elbows, Tees)
Form any necessary bends, elbows, or tees according to the specific instructions and cutting patterns for each modification type (e.g., 90-degree bend, large radius bend, elbow, 90-degree tee, Y-junction tee, width reduction, or level change). For example, to create a 90-degree bend, cut the side wires at the bend location, then smoothly bend the tray until the inside edges meet.
- Connect Tray Sections and Secure Modifications
Join different cable tray sections or secure formed modifications using QTPBNWK/QTPBNWKBLK Splice Kits and QTPSSW3/QTPSSW3BLK Splice Washers. For enhanced support and stability, especially when connecting tray sides or forming complex junctions, utilize QTPUS10/QTPUS10BLK Universal Splice Bars or QTP90TKIT/QTP90TKITBLK T-Connection Splice Bars as specified for the particular connection.
- Support the Installed Cable Tray System
Install supports for straight sections at regular intervals, typically 6-foot (1.5m) centers. Ensure that supports are positioned within 24 inches (610mm) of any splice on straight sections. The span between supports must not exceed the length of the tray. Provide additional supports around all bends and wherever the cable tray changes levels to ensure the stability and integrity of the entire system.
