Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Heat gun or propane torch
Supplies needed:
Copper compression connectors, Heat shrink tubing
- Select the correct connector
Choose a connector that matches the wire size and material. Do not use copper connectors on aluminum wire.
- Prepare the wire
Strip the wire insulation to the length specified in the tool chart without damaging the conductor strands. Clean the wire to ensure a good connection.
- Insert and crimp the connector
Insert the stripped wire into the connector until it stops. Use the crimping tool to crimp the connector, following the markings for proper spacing. Ensure to crimp near the tongue end and move towards the wire end.
- Inspect the crimp
After crimping, inspect the connection for any sharp edges, flash, or burrs and remove them if present.
- Apply heat shrink insulation
Cut the heat shrink tubing to the desired length, allowing for a minimum of 1.5 inches of overlap on the wire insulation. Use a heat gun or propane torch to shrink the tubing, moving from the crimped portion towards the insulated wire until adhesive flow indicates completion.
