How to Prepare Fiber Optic Indoor/Outdoor Stranded Loose Tube Cable
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the preparation of fiber optic cables, including sheath removal, core preparation, and fiber preparation.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Eye and Hand Protection, Approved Cable Cutters, Needle Nose Pliers, Scissors/Snips, Sheath Knife, Buffer Tube Removal Tool, Primary Coating Stripping Tool, Tape Measure
Supplies needed:
Clean Cotton Cloths, Water Absorbent Tape, Flame Barrier Tape, Binder Strings
- Remove the cable sheath
Mark a length of six feet (2 meters) from the end of the cable on the outer sheath. Use a sheath knife to ring the circumference of the sheath at this mark and gently flex the cable to separate the sheath. Discard the removed sheath section.
- Prepare the cable core
Cut the ripcord to expose the color-coded buffer tubes. Unwrap and cut the outer strength members, flame barrier tape, and water absorbent tape. Remove the binder strings and separate the buffer tubes from the central strength member.
- Prepare the buffer tubes
Check the blade setting on the buffer tube removal tool by scoring a small section of the tube. Measure the length of the tube to be removed, mark it, and ring the tube in 1-2 ft sections. Remove the desired amount of fiber and wipe any excess thixotropic gel from the exposed fibers with a clean cloth.
- Access the optical fibers
Using scissors, cut the fibers to be terminated at the appropriate length. Strip the primary coating from the fibers using the primary coating stripping tool, and wipe with an alcohol-dampened cloth to remove any residual debris.
