How to Install and Crimp NSI Copper Compression Connectors

Install NSI copper compression lugs or splices on concentric, compressed, or compact copper conductors. This guide covers conductor preparation, connector selection, and crimping with approved tools and dies.

Estimated time: 15m

Tools needed:

Wire brush, Approved crimp tool, Approved dies or dieless crimp tool, Cable cutter/stripper

Supplies needed:

NSI copper compression connector or splice sized for the conductor, Copper conductor, Optional anti-oxidation cleaning supplies if required by your procedure

  1. Select the correct connector

Choose an NSI lug or splice that matches the conductor size and connector series. Verify the connector is intended for concentric, compressed, or compact copper conductors before starting.

  2. Strip the conductor to the proper length

Carefully strip the insulation without nicking the strands. Strip enough insulation so the conductor will fully insert into the barrel and completely fill it.

  3. Clean the stripped conductor

Wire brush the stripped portion of the conductor to remove oxide films and contamination. Ensure the conductor is clean before insertion to promote a reliable connection.

  4. Insert the conductor fully into the barrel

Insert the stripped conductor completely into the connector barrel so the conductor is fully seated. Verify the stripped portion is clean and the barrel is properly filled before crimping.

  5. Crimp the connector with approved tools

Use an approved NSI compression tool and the correct die set for the connector size, or use the NSI N12ID dieless tool where applicable. Follow the barrel markings for suggested crimp locations, and make the required number of crimps; long-barrel lugs and splices require twice the crimps shown in the table.

  6. Verify the finished connection

Inspect the crimped connector to confirm it is secure and properly formed. Check that the conductor remains fully seated and that the connection matches the specified connector and tool requirements before energizing the circuit.
