How to Install NSI Copper Compression Connectors

Install NSI copper compression lugs or splices on concentric, compressed, or compact copper conductors. This guide covers conductor preparation, connector selection, and crimping with approved tools and dies.

Tools needed:

Wire stripper, Wire brush, Approved compression crimp tool, Approved dies or dieless crimp tool (as applicable)

Supplies needed:

NSI copper compression lug or splice sized for the conductor, Copper conductor cable, Approved connector barrel markings/reference chart

  1. Select the correct connector and tool

Choose an NSI lug or splice that matches the conductor size and application. Verify the connector series, barrel length, and approved crimp tool/die combination from the chart before starting. Use only approved tools and dies for the connector type.

  2. Strip the conductor insulation

Carefully strip the insulation from the conductor without nicking the strands. Strip enough insulation so the conductor can be fully inserted into the connector barrel and completely fill it. Wear appropriate PPE and keep the conductor de-energized before handling.

  3. Clean the stripped conductor

Wire brush the stripped portion of the conductor to remove oxide films and contamination. Make sure the exposed copper is clean before crimping, because poor surface preparation can reduce the quality of the connection.

  4. Insert the conductor fully into the connector

Insert the cleaned conductor completely into the connector barrel until it bottoms out. Confirm that the stripped portion is fully seated and that no insulation is trapped inside the barrel.

  5. Crimp the connector at the marked locations

Crimp the connector using the approved NSI tool and die set. Follow the barrel markings for suggested crimp locations, and apply the required number of crimps for the connector series. For long-barrel lugs and splices, perform twice the number of crimps shown in the chart.

  6. Verify the finished connection

Inspect the completed crimp to confirm the conductor is secure, fully inserted, and properly compressed. Check that the connector matches the conductor size and that the crimp locations were followed correctly before placing the assembly into service.
