How to Install NSI Copper Compression Connectors

Install and crimp NSI copper compression lugs or splices on concentric, compressed, or compact copper conductors. Select the correct connector size, prepare the conductor, and crimp it with the approved tool and die set.

Estimated time: 15m

Tools needed:

Wire stripper, Wire brush, Approved crimp tool or mechanical crimp tool, Approved dies for the selected connector size

Supplies needed:

NSI copper compression lug or splice connector, Copper conductor cable, Optional NSI M-250 or M-500 mechanical crimp tool for large cable sizes, Optional NSI N12ID dieless crimp tool, Optional NSI N1240 tool

  1. Select the correct connector

Choose the proper NSI lug or splice connector for the cable size and conductor type. Verify that the connector series and barrel style match the application before starting. Do not use an undersized or mismatched connector.

  2. Prepare the conductor

Carefully strip the insulation from the conductor without nicking the strands. Strip only enough length so the conductor can be fully inserted into the connector barrel and completely fill it. Safety warning: damaged strands can reduce conductivity and connection quality.

  3. Clean the stripped conductor

Wire brush the stripped portion of the conductor to remove any oxide film or contamination. Make sure the exposed conductor is clean and dry before insertion.

  4. Insert the conductor fully

Insert the stripped conductor completely into the connector barrel until it is fully seated. Confirm that the conductor fills the barrel and that no bare conductor is left exposed outside the connector.

  5. Crimp the connector

Use an approved UL-listed crimp tool and the correct die set for the connector size. Follow the barrel markings for suggested crimp locations when using N12ID or N1240 tools, and make the required number of crimps for the connector series. Long-barrel lugs and splices require twice as many crimps as shown in the parenthesis.

  6. Verify the finished connection

Inspect the crimped connector to confirm it is fully compressed and properly aligned. Check that the conductor cannot be pulled out and that the connection matches the required crimp count and tool specification for the selected size.
