Install and crimp NSI copper compression lugs or splices on copper conductors. This guide covers conductor preparation, connector selection, and proper crimping for a secure electrical connection.

Tools needed:

Wire brush, Cable stripper, Approved compression crimp tool, Approved dies or dieless crimp tool (as applicable)

Supplies needed:

NSI copper compression lug or splice sized for the conductor, Copper conductor cable

  1. Select the correct connector

    Choose the proper NSI lug or splice connector for the cable size and conductor type. Verify that the connector matches the wire gauge and series required before starting.

  2. Strip the conductor insulation

    Carefully strip the insulation from the conductor without nicking the strands. Strip enough insulation so the conductor will fully insert into the barrel and completely fill it.

  3. Clean the stripped conductor

    Wire brush the stripped portion of the conductor to remove oxide films and contamination. Ensure the exposed copper is clean before insertion.

  4. Insert the conductor fully

    Insert the cleaned conductor completely into the connector barrel. Confirm the stripped portion is fully seated and fills the barrel before crimping.

  5. Crimp the connector

    Use an approved NSI compression crimp tool and the correct die set for the connector series and wire size. Follow the barrel markings for suggested crimp locations, and make the required number of crimps; long-barrel lugs and splices require twice the crimps shown in parentheses.

  6. Verify the finished connection

    Inspect the crimped connector to confirm it is secure and properly formed. Make sure the conductor has not shifted and that the connection is suitable for the intended application.
