How to Install and Crimp NSI Copper Compression Connectors

Install NSI copper compression lugs or splices on concentric, compressed, or compact copper conductors. This guide covers stripping, cleaning, inserting, and crimping the conductor using the correct connector and approved tool.

Tools needed:

Wire stripper, Wire brush, Approved compression crimp tool (NSI N12ID or NSI N1240), Optional mechanical crimp tools: NSI M-250 or NSI M-500 for applicable cable, Approved dies for the selected connector and tool

Supplies needed:

Correct NSI copper compression lug or splice for the conductor size, Copper conductor cable, Connector barrel markings/reference chart for selecting the proper size

  1. Select the correct connector and tool

Choose the NSI copper compression lug or splice that matches the conductor size and application. Verify the connector series, barrel length, and required die/tool from the chart before starting. Use only approved tools and dies for the connector size.

  2. Strip the conductor to the proper length

Carefully strip the insulation from the conductor without nicking or damaging the strands. Strip enough insulation so the conductor will fully insert into the connector barrel and completely fill it. Wear appropriate PPE and keep the conductor de-energized before handling.

  3. Clean the stripped conductor

Wire brush the stripped portion of the conductor to remove oxide films and contamination. Ensure the exposed copper is clean and ready for insertion, since poor surface condition can reduce connection quality.

  4. Insert the conductor fully into the barrel

Insert the cleaned conductor completely into the connector barrel until it is fully seated. Confirm that the stripped portion fills the barrel and that no strands are left outside the connector.

  5. Crimp the connector with the approved tool

Crimp the connector using the specified NSI tool and die set for the connector series. Follow the barrel markings for suggested crimp locations, and make the number of crimps indicated for the connector type. Long-barrel lugs and splices require twice as many crimps as shown in the parenthesis.

  6. Verify the finished connection

Inspect the completed crimp to confirm the conductor is secure, fully seated, and properly compressed. Check that the connector matches the cable size and that the crimp locations were followed correctly before placing the assembly into service.
