Install NSI copper compression lugs or splices on copper conductors by stripping, cleaning, inserting, and crimping the cable with the correct approved tool and die. Follow the connector size chart to match the conductor size and use the specified crimp locations for a secure connection.
Estimated time: 15m
Tools needed:
Wire stripper, Wire brush, Approved compression crimp tool, Approved dies for the selected connector series, Mechanical crimp tool (optional: NSI M-250 or NSI M-500 for compatible cable)
Supplies needed:
NSI copper compression connector or splice sized for the conductor, Copper conductor cable, Appropriate connector barrel size from the chart
- Select the correct connector
Choose an NSI lug or splice that matches the conductor size and connector series required for the installation. Verify the connector is approved for concentric, compressed, or compact copper conductors and confirm the required strip length and crimp pattern from the chart before starting.
- Strip and clean the conductor
Carefully strip the insulation from the conductor without nicking the strands. Strip only enough length so the conductor will fully insert into the barrel, then wire brush the stripped portion to remove oxide films. Safety warning: Do not damage or cut conductor strands during stripping.
- Insert the conductor fully
Insert the cleaned conductor completely into the connector barrel so the stripped portion fills the barrel. Verify the conductor is fully seated and clean before crimping to ensure a proper mechanical and electrical connection.
- Crimp the connector
Use an approved compression crimp tool and the correct die set for the connector series. Make the number of crimps shown for the selected connector; long-barrel lugs and splices require twice the crimps indicated in the chart. Follow the barrel markings for suggested crimp locations when using NSI N12ID or N1240 tools.
- Verify the finished connection
Inspect the crimped connector to confirm the conductor is fully seated and the crimp is complete and properly located. If the installation uses a long-barrel lug or splice, confirm that all required crimps were made and that the connection is secure before energizing the circuit.
