Listed for 35KV maximum when properly installed. How to Install Copper Compression Connectors
Install NSI copper compression lugs or splices on copper conductors by selecting the correct connector, preparing the wire, and crimping with the approved tool and die set. Follow the strip-length and crimp-location guidance to ensure a secure, UL-approved connection.
Estimated time: 15m
Tools needed:
Wire stripper, Wire brush, Approved crimp tool or compression tool, Approved dies for the selected connector series
Supplies needed:
Correct NSI copper compression lug or splice connector, Copper conductor cable, Optional anti-oxide cleaning materials if required by site practice
- Select the correct connector
Choose the proper NSI lug or splice for the conductor size and series being installed. Verify that the connector matches the cable size and that the tool/die combination is approved for the connector series before starting.
- Strip and clean the conductor
Carefully strip the insulation to the specified length without nicking or damaging the strands. Wire brush the stripped conductor to remove oxide films, and keep the exposed copper clean before insertion. Warning: Do not use a conductor with damaged strands or contamination.
- Insert the conductor fully
Insert the stripped conductor completely into the connector barrel so the conductor fills the barrel fully. Verify that the wire is seated all the way in and that no insulation is trapped inside the connector.
- Crimp the connector
Use the approved mechanical crimp tool and the correct die set for the connector series and wire size. Make the required number of crimps at the manufacturer-suggested barrel markings; long-barrel connectors require twice the number of crimps shown in the table. Warning: Use only certified UL-approved tools and dies for the listed connector.
- Inspect the finished connection
Check that the crimp is properly formed, the connector is secure, and the conductor cannot be pulled out by hand. Confirm the installation matches the required strip length and crimp count for the selected connector size and series.
