Select the correct aluminum lug or splice connector, prepare the conductor, and crimp it using the approved tool and die set. Follow the strip-length and crimp-count requirements to ensure a secure connection.
Tools needed:
Wire stripper, Wire brush, Approved crimp tool (NSI N12ID, N1240 series, Greenlee EK/RK/HK1240, Burndy Y-35, Y750, PAT 750)
Supplies needed:
Correct aluminum lug or splice connector for the conductor size, Aluminum conductor, Approved die set for the selected connector, 15-ton tool for 1000 MCM connectors
- Select the correct connector
Choose the aluminum lug or splice connector that matches the conductor size and series requirements. Verify the wire range, color code, and approved tool/die combination before starting.
- Strip the conductor to the required length
Carefully strip the insulation from the conductor without nicking the strands. Strip enough insulation so the conductor can be completely inserted into the barrel and fill it fully.
- Clean the stripped conductor
Wire brush the stripped portion of the conductor to remove oxide films. Keep the exposed conductor clean so it can make proper contact inside the connector barrel.
- Insert the conductor fully into the connector
Insert the cleaned conductor completely into the connector barrel. Confirm that the stripped portion is fully seated and that no strands are left outside the barrel.
- Crimp the connector with the approved tool
Crimp the connector using the specified approved tool and die set for the connector series. Follow the barrel markings for suggested crimp locations, and apply the required number of crimps per side for splice connectors.
- Verify special tool requirements
For 1000 MCM connectors, use a 15-ton tool. Recheck that the completed crimp matches the connector series requirements and that the connection is secure before energizing the circuit.
