Install an NSI aluminum compression lug or splice by selecting the correct connector size, preparing the conductor, and crimping it with the approved tool and die. Follow the strip-length and crimp-count guidance to ensure a secure, code-compliant connection.
Tools needed:
Wire stripper, Wire brush, Approved compression crimp tool (NSI N12ID, N1240 series, Greenlee EK/RK/HK1240,, Burndy Y-35/Y750, or PAT 750 as applicable)
Supplies needed:
Correct NSI aluminum lug or splice connector for the conductor size, Appropriate approved die set for the selected tool, Conductor/cable to be terminated
- Select the correct connector and tool
Choose the NSI aluminum lug or splice connector that matches the conductor size and series requirements. Verify the strip length and approved tool/die combination from the chart before starting, and do not use an unapproved tool. For 1000 MCM connectors, use 15-ton tools.
- Strip the conductor to the specified length
Carefully strip the insulation from the conductor to the charted strip length without nicking or damaging the strands. Make sure the stripped length is long enough for the conductor to fully insert into the connector barrel and fill it completely.
- Clean the stripped conductor
Wire brush the stripped portion of the conductor to remove oxide films and contamination. Keep the cleaned conductor dry and handle it carefully so the surface remains clean before insertion.
- Insert the conductor fully into the barrel
Insert the clean, stripped conductor completely into the connector barrel so the conductor fills the barrel. Confirm that the conductor is fully seated before crimping.
- Crimp the connector at the marked locations
Crimp the connector using the approved tool and die set, following the barrel markings for suggested crimp locations. Apply the number of crimps specified for the connector type; for splice connectors, the crimp count is per side. Verify that each crimp is completed fully and evenly.
