Overview

The ABB Star Teck STX050-462S is a steel jacketed cable fitting designed for hazardous locations. Developed in collaboration with engineers from the petrochemical, oil and gas industries, this fitting sets a benchmark for ease of installation in challenging environments. Its integral sealing chamber is designed for straightforward filling, and the disconnectable construction minimizes cable preparation time. This approach eliminates the need for traditional cement sealants, as a dedicated line of liquid and putty sealants was developed concurrently for efficient sealing. The STX050-462S features a 1/2 inch hub size and accommodates cable jacket diameters ranging from 0.525 to 0.650 inches. This specific design ensures a secure and reliable connection for critical power and control circuits in environments where explosion protection is paramount. ABB Installation Products, a division of ABB, brings extensive expertise to the design and manufacturing of such specialized electrical components. The UNSPSC code for this product is 39121311.

How to Install STX Series Star Teck Cable Fittings

This guide provides comprehensive instructions for preparing cables and installing STX Series Star Teck fittings, including detailed procedures for both liquid (SC4-KIT-1) and putty (SC65) sealing compounds.

Estimated time: 2h

Tools needed:

Hacksaw, Screwdriver, Wire strippers, Wooden dowel

Supplies needed:

STX Series Cable Fitting, SC4-KIT-1 LIQUID SEALANT or SC65 PUTTY SEALANT, Fiber damming material (for liquid sealant), Gloves (for putty sealant), Damp cloth

  1. Verify Circuits are De-energized

WARNING: Risk of electrical shock. Before installing or performing maintenance, verify that all circuits are de-energized. Ensure power is completely off to prevent injury.

  2. Determine Working Length and Cut Armor

Determine the required length of conductors inside the enclosure. Remove a portion of the outer jacket to expose the cable armor. Carefully cut the armor using a hacksaw. CAUTION: Do not nick or cut the conductor insulation during this process.

  3. Trim Outer Jacket to Specification

Trim the outer jacket to adjust the exposed armor strip length as indicated in the product table for your specific STX fitting (e.g., 0.405 inches for STX050-462). This ensures proper sealing and fit.

  4. Feed Cable and Secure Gland Nut

Feed the prepared cable through the gland nut opening and push until the cable armor hits the internal end stop. Tighten the gland nut until an appropriate seal is obtained or to the maximum torque specified in the product table (e.g., 300 in-lbs for STX050-462). Ensure the cable remains centered for an optimal seal.

  5. Disassemble Fitting Components

Disassemble the hub from the body sub-assembly by loosening the union. Unscrew the sealing chamber from the body sub-assembly. These parts will be reassembled after compound application.

  6. Prepare Inner Cable Conductors

Trim the inner jacket to a length of 1/8 to 3/8 inches to expose the conductor bundle. If installing shielded data cables, additionally remove the outer (overall) shield carefully to avoid damaging inner shields, and remove any filler materials.

  7. Prepare for Sealing Compound Application

Choose your sealing compound: SC4-KIT-1 LIQUID SEALANT (for all power/shielded data cables) or SC65 PUTTY SEALANT (NOT for shielded cables or 5+ conductors). If using liquid, pack fiber damming material tightly into voids between conductors and body, spreading grounding conductor strands. If using putty, slightly spread insulated conductors and grounding conductor strands.

  8. Mix and Apply Sealing Compound

For Liquid (SC4-KIT-1): Screw the sealing chamber onto the body. Position vertically. Mix compound per package instructions and dispense into the chamber. Fill to the top (or half, wait 2 hrs, then fill rest for larger fittings). For Putty (SC65): Thoroughly mix putty until uniform blue. WARNING: Wear gloves. Apply putty around conductors, forming a plug. Slide chamber onto cable/compound, screw to body. Fill throat area, packing tightly with a wooden dowel.

  9. Clean Excess Compound and Allow to Set

CAUTION: Remove all excess compound material from outside the sealing chamber with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners. Allow the compound to solidify/set for approximately 1 hour (or 2 hours for the second fill stage of large liquid fittings) before proceeding or disturbing conductors.

  10. Mount Hub and Final Assembly

Mount the hub in the desired location. Once the sealing compound is set, place the encapsulated assembly into the hub. Secure it in position by tightening the union until it bottoms (metal to metal contact). If using putty, repack compound tightly around conductors if needed.
