How to Install the HLT Series Fitting for Type TC Tray Cables in Liquid Tight Flexible Metal Conduit
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the HLT series fitting for hazardous locations, specifically for Type TC tray cables enclosed in a liquid-tight flexible metal conduit using liquid sealant. Always verify all circuits are de-energized before starting.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Screwdriver, Sealant mixing tool (if not provided)
Supplies needed:
HLT Series Fitting (gland nut, sealing ring, ground cone, insert, body), Type TC Tray Cable, Liquid Tight Flexible Metal Conduit (LTFMC), SC4-KIT-1 LIQUID SEALANT, Fiber damming material, Sealing tape, Mounting hardware (screws, etc.)
- De-energize Circuits and Prepare Cable
CAUTION: Risk of electrical shock. Before installing or maintaining, verify that all circuits are de-energized. Remove the jacket from the end of the cable to expose the working length required inside the enclosure or device. Remove all cable fillers and clean individual conductor insulation. CAUTION: Do not nick or cut the conductor insulation.
- Pack Fiber Damming Material
Pack the fiber damming material tightly into all voids between conductors and between conductors and the cable jacket.
- Spread Grounding Conductors
Where applicable, spread the strands of any uninsulated grounding conductors.
- Disassemble Connector and Assemble Components
Disassemble the HLT connector. Slide the gland nut and sealing ring onto the conduit. Slide the ground cone onto the cable and thread it into the Liquid Tight Flexible Metal Conduit (LTFMC) until it is tight.
- Apply Sealing Tape
Apply the supplied sealing tape over the cable jacket approximately 1/2 inch from the end. Build the diameter of the tape slightly larger than the inside diameter of the ground cone.
- Seat Cable into Ground Cone
Push the cable back into the ground cone with a slight twist until only half the width of the applied sealing tape is exposed.
- Insert Cable into Insert
Insert the cable into the insert until the grounding cone is fully seated into the insert.
- Secure Conduit and Insert Vertically
Secure the conduit and insert assembly in a vertical position. Adequately support the conduit (not the insert) to prevent it from sliding out of the insert.
- Mix and Dispense Sealing Compound
Mix the SC4-KIT-1 liquid sealing compound following the instructions provided on its package. Dispense the sealing compound into the end of the insert until the level of the compound stabilizes and fills to the top. Wait approximately 1 hour for the compound to solidify. CAUTION: Do not install sealing compound below 70°F (21°C). Avoid prolonged contact with skin and eyes; wash immediately with plenty of water if contact occurs.
- Mount Body and Secure Encapsulated Insert
Mount the body of the HLT fitting in the desired location. Place the encapsulated insert into the body and secure it in position by tightening the gland nut until it bottoms on the insert, ensuring metal-to-metal contact.
